Cruel Irony

We had a couple of mild days in January, but for the fact that the wind was blowing really hard.  Annoyingly hard.  I wanted to look for glass so I went to Buttermilk Bay Beach hoping that I'd find something that was actually worn down, but it was almost all fresh.  This is the cruel irony about that beach:  It's full of glass.  It's all over the place.  But because it doesn't get any wave action, except for the high and low tides, the glass will never ever wear down, at least not in this lifetime.  I found a few pieces that were scratched, and for the most part none of these edges were sharp enough to cut me so that's why I took them home.  There's a large chunk of some kind of crockery that's brown on one side and white on the other. I also found a very rusty spoon but I don't think it can be saved.  Those yellowish shards on the right are textured.

So are two of the white pieces.

  5. I love coloured glass containers too, JoJo. Blue and green are my fave though. I leave them in the window so the sun shines through.

With that textured glass, you could do rubbings on art paper, then attach to a mat and frame. I'd love to go beachcombing, haven't done that in a long time. Thanks for sharing when you do.

  6. I've read that Sea Glass is becoming quite scarce, partly due to our being more cognizant of our planet and our efforts to recycle and not litter. Sort of a mixed bag of emotions . . . great that we're more conscientious of our environment . . . sad that it is now rare to find beautifully weathered sea glass with its soft matt finish and smooth sand worn edges. :(

  7. Well I have to admit that I'm a 'tree hugger' but I my desire for sea glass overpowers my desire to keep the environment clean. When I got home from a beach glass junket, I put as my FB status, 'Not that I'm advocating littering, but when choosing your beach beverages, please remember that bottles come in other colours than clear white. Just sayin'.

  9. Not sure if you may have had this bit of news over there, but a guy walking his dog on a nearby local beach found a lump of ambergris the size of a football.

If you don't know what ambergris is, it's a collection of minerals that collect in a whale's gut, which at some point the whale ejects.

Apparently it is used in the perfume industry, and so far the guy is being made offers of between £100,000 - £150,000 for the ambergris.

    Beach combing here I come!

  10. What stood out for me was the shell. It's beautiful. I need to get to the beach too. We had those pretty days also but it was so windy I didn't go. I need some sand for my zen dish.
