Liz was down for the weekend a couple weeks ago, so she & I met up at the Sandwich Marina for a walk to the Sagamore Bridge and back. It was a GORGEOUS day. So warm & clear. The trees were on fire.
I hadn't walked to the bridge on this side since the 1980s, before I moved away. They have now marked the miles and half miles on the service roads on both sides. We were so engrossed in our conversation that I didn't notice exactly how far it is from the Marina to the bridge and back. I looked it up when I got home; I never realized it was a 4 mile round trip. Not too shabby!
They are still painting the bridge. See that guy up there? The traffic is a nightmare because of this project which is taking way, way too long.
There was a woman on a bike, that was stopped and looking straight down at the water. At this point, the service road is quite a bit higher from the water than it is on the other side, so we couldn't see what she was looking at. She looked up at us, saw our cameras and said, 'You might want to take a picture of the heron down there.' We were grateful for the heads up!

Wow, looks like it was a truly gorgeous day. It would be easy to forget the distance when walking on such a pretty day and to have nature's lovely fall colors to capture one's attention.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why DOT seems to take 10 times as long to get projects done now-a-days. Used to be they could get a whole highway built in the time it takes to paint a bridge. But maybe my perspective of time has changed with age. :(
It really was an amazing day! We were so lost in our conversation that we could have easily walked the entire 7 miles (one way) but I had to get back home to meet up with another friend for a train ride!
DeleteI don't know why road projects take so long either. They built the Sagamore Bridge in the 1930s in less time than it's taking to repaint the damn thing now. Maybe because there were more workers to assemble it vs. painting. There's a tiny little bridge near me that they've rebuilt and also added a second one next to it and that's gone way over schedule too. Started in April 2012 and was supposed to be done last month but they are still working on it.
The colors are so beautiful right now, but the leaves are falling and need to be dealt with. I love all seasons except winter and wish I could learn to love Winter,
ReplyDeleteI don't bother raking. I just let the leaves pile up and rot over the winter. Of course then they hide all the dog bombs, which makes walking the yard like a mine field!
DeleteBeautiful! You are so lucky to have extended Falls down there. Ours is severely short; the leaves turn colour, then bang! Off the branches in days.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Compared to out west, our fall is pretty fast too. Back in CA the leaves start changing in late October and peak at Christmas. In WA, they last through November as long as there are no rain/wind storms.
DeleteI know it's a harbinger of winter, but I LOVE autumn
ReplyDeleteI do too. Like today I have on a long sleeved shirt and shorts. I'm actually kinda chilly but I can't give in to winter! lol
DeleteHerons make for interesting photos. We have a lot of them on the West Coast too.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a lovely 4 mile walk. xo
I'm just grateful it's a flat 4 miles with no hills. Try that in San Francisco and I'd be dead. Even when I lived there and was in good shape I would die.
DeleteGreat pix again JoJo. I used to walk 4 miles a day when I lived in NC but these days I can hardly walk any distance at all.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm sorry to hear that you have trouble walking distances. That's too bad. :( It's truly the only exercise I can tolerate.
DeleteSighs. Beautiful foliage. This really is a glorious time of year. Wish it lasted longer!
ReplyDeleteI wish it lasted longer too!!!
