Sunset at the Railroad Bridge & the Moon

It was the Saturday night of Labor Day weekend and I was already in my jammies by 4:00 PM. Around 6, Russell asked if I felt like getting some ice cream, and I answered 'no thanks'.  45 minutes later, he asked me if I wanted to take a walk at the Canal.  I didn't really want to, but I felt bad about saying no to ice cream (and anyway I knew a walk at the Canal was gonna end up in a trip to Betty Ann's Dairy Freeze), so I said, 'I just want you to know that you are the ONLY person I would put a bra on and get dressed for at this hour. THAT'S how much I love you.'

It really was a lovely evening, with a nice cool breeze and crescent moon.  There were still quite a few people walking, biking and fishing, despite the gathering dusk.

As we were walking and chatting, I heard the bridge whistle sound.  Russell stopped and looked at me quizzically as I excitedly said, 'The bridge is gonna go down for a train!  That's the warning horn!!!'

Boat waiting for the bridge to complete it's cycle.

The train had crossed and we waited for the bridge to ascend, but it didn't.  We were already walking back towards it when we heard another train whistle on the other side.  Two trains for one lowering???  NICE!

Here comes the second one!

Sunset train on the bridge pics.....not too easy to come by.

 What a moon!

However this one pulled about halfway across the bridge, switched off the main engine lights, and then backed up to use the other set of tracks over there.

OK Russell deserved an ice cream since his idea enabled me to get some really awesome photos!!! Note they were already featuring pumpkin soft serve!!!

Hard to believe but the last time...and actually only time...we had Betty Ann's was on Memorial Day when I got sick.  So this was a nice way to bookend the summer.  I got the watermelon sherbet/black raspberry twist.

It really was a lovely weekend, even though heat and humidity greeted us for a few days at the beginning of September.

And an obligatory moon shoot because I love shooting the moon.

  1. Interesting I don't think I have ever seen a bridge that goes up and down like that. I have seen many that split in the middle to open up for a boat going through. Great pix again JoJo. How come you were in your jammies at 6 p.m.?

    1. Why stay in clothes if you aren't going anywhere? No one's here except him and the dogs. It's more comfy to be in jammies. I usually get right in them after I get the mail, on weekdays, which is about 4.

The Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge is very unique and it's a treat to see it raising/lowering and a train on it. I'm hoping to take the harvest train ride next month and then I'll actually get to cross the Canal when it's lowered.

  2. JoJo, I absolutely love those train shots, and printed one on letter size paper to take in to show hubs in the hospital where he is still recovering. A fellow blogger in the California mtns sent me another set of train photos that encircle a mountain. Hubs loves trains. Russell did deserve an award for helping get you out to get such neat photos. Thanks for sharing them (I like the moon photo, too).

    1. Thank you! There's something really special about trains isn't there? I love them too! I hope the pics helped cheer up your hubby. When will he be home?

    2. Can't tell when hubs will come home, it's been 3 months now and he's made advances but needs more physical abilities, and will have to go to a rehab centre first. He has good days and bad days. It's hard. But your photo cheered him up immensely. It was the bridge shot at dusk as the train comes over with lights on. Fantastic photo.

  5. Talk about fortuitous! What a stroke of luck to get to watch not one but two trains cross that amazing bridge during the dusky hours of early evening. Having the train lights on made for some truly neat photos as did that marvelous sunset. Yeah, guess I'd say it was worth the bother of getting all dressed again and that ice cream cone looks like a reward in itself. :)

    1. Thanks! Yeah Russell got major props for dragging me out of the house. It was fun for him too because he'd never actually seen a train on it, despite his 52 years in this area! That's why he didn't know what the bridge horn was when it sounded.
