Sunset at the Railroad Bridge & the Moon

It was the Saturday night of Labor Day weekend and I was already in my jammies by 4:00 PM. Around 6, Russell asked if I felt like getting some ice cream, and I answered 'no thanks'.  45 minutes later, he asked me if I wanted to take a walk at the Canal.  I didn't really want to, but I felt bad about saying no to ice cream (and anyway I knew a walk at the Canal was gonna end up in a trip to Betty Ann's Dairy Freeze), so I said, 'I just want you to know that you are the ONLY person I would put a bra on and get dressed for at this hour. THAT'S how much I love you.'  

It really was a lovely evening, with a nice cool breeze and crescent moon.  There were still quite a few people walking, biking and fishing, despite the gathering dusk.

As we were walking and chatting, I heard the bridge whistle sound.  Russell stopped and looked at me quizzically as I excitedly said, 'The bridge is gonna go down for a train!  That's the warning horn!!!'

The train had crossed and we waited for the bridge to ascend, but it didn't.  We were already walking back towards it when we heard another train whistle on the other side.  Two trains for one lowering???  NICE!

However this one pulled about halfway across the bridge, switched off the main engine lights, and then backed up to use the other set of tracks over there.  

OK Russell deserved an ice cream since his idea enabled me to get some really awesome photos!!! Note they were already featuring pumpkin soft serve!!!

Hard to believe but the last time...and actually only time...we had Betty Ann's was on Memorial Day when I got sick.  So this was a nice way to bookend the summer.  I got the watermelon sherbet/black raspberry twist. 

It really was a lovely weekend, even though heat and humidity greeted us for a few days at the beginning of September.

Betty Ann's Dairy Freeze

Betty Ann's Dairy Freeze has been in Buzzards Bay since 1955.  I didn't go to it often, when I was growing up, unless I happened to be at the bowling alley across the street with my dad, uncle and cousins.  It's great to be able to go there now though!  It's much closer than Twin Acres.  

They don't have as many flavours as Twin Acres, but they do have some interesting specials which I love.

I had banana and raspberry sherbet twist.  It was soooo good.  I also highly recommend their coconut & orange sherbet twist, coconut & pineapple sherbet twist and the raspberry/blueberry twist.

Twin Acres is the Place To Be....

Twin Acres opened for the season on March 31st and all I can say is WA-freakin-HOOOO!!!!

When Sandwich was still a small town, the ice cream shop everyone went to was called Frannie & George's, or Fran & Georgie's, depending on who you ask. It was across the street from Sandwich Mini Golf, on Rte. 6A and everyone knew everyone, and it was always busy.  It closed in the 70's, and we were left without our go-to ice cream shop.  The closest would have been Four Seas in Hyannis or at Dick & Ellie's Mini Golf in New Seabury.  

Twin Acres opened in the mid-70's, on Rte. 6A, close to the town line with Bourne.  It seemed like such a looong drive from E. Sandwich where I lived, near the town line with Barnstable.  It was such a treat on summer nights, to be playing w/ my cousins and hear the 'grown ups' announce that a Twin Acres run was in the offing, and did we want sundaes? And who wanted to go for a ride to get them?  The 3 of us crowded into the car for the trip down there.  

Everyone has gone to Twinnies since that time, not to mention the tons and tons of tourists in the summer.    I would always go whenever I'd visit from the west coast, no matter how cold it still is in the spring.  I had to have my usual vanilla/chocolate soft serve twist. They truly are the best.  Their menu has branched out a lot since that time.  It's been renovated and a larger parking lot (but still too small) was made.  There are benches and picnic tables too, and it's beautifully landscaped.  Sometimes you can't even get close to the place on summer nights.

Right now it's only open on weekends.  Good Friday found us in Sandwich running errands, and we stopped at Twin Acres for a cone of soft serve.  It wasn't terribly warm, but it was sunny and pleasant enough to sit on one of the benches to finish them before leaving for BBay.  It's so great to be sharing this time honoured tradition with my honey, and I'm sure we'll be back several more times this season!
