A Scary Combo, Indeed!

This was a store in Columbia, Missouri.  Pretty scary combo don't you think?  I have nothing against liquor stores or gun shops, but combining them into one place?  I think it's gone now. If you click on this pic to make it bigger, you can see the reflection of the UHaul truck I was in.  I wanted to pose the ex in front of the store with a funny hat and the fake rifle my dad made, but as we approached at 7:30 AM, we found the shop open and decided against making fun of them.  Drunk, armed southern rednecks and 2 New England hippies in Grateful Dead shirts probably weren't a good mix.  Instead, we rolled by very slowly so that I could get a shot of the sign.

As an aside, because of this store, since 1989 I now sing Warren Zevon's 'Lawyers, Guns and Money' as 'Liquor Guns and Ammo'.

  1. Ha ha, for sure. I'm a gun owner advocate, but only in the hands of responsible, legal (and sober) people.

I live in Missouri. You were in Columbia? That's not too far from me.

    1. Yes, we were on I-70 from the east coast as far as Denver when we drove up to Wyoming to get on I-80 to San Francisco. We stopped in St. Louis to tour A-B and have lunch near the Arch, and we got as far as Columbia before stopping for the night. This was in 1989 though.

  2. Ohhh, I clearly looked over that part, but I lived here in 1980 also.

  3. I've seen similar businesses next door to each other in other areas of the south. I do not approve of the gun laws in the US, but I don't live there anymore. At the border with Canada, many US guns are confiscated - they aren't allowed across the border, as far as I know, although there may be extenuating circumstances. Check with the border if you plan to motor northwards. You're right about the mix between cultures.

    1. The thing is, the gun laws go hand in hand with our constitution and no one is in a real hurry to step on the 2nd amendment. It's a slippery slope. There's no need to be selling assault rifles and stuff like that, I agree. I also think background checks and waiting periods must be enforced. Anything beyond that makes me uncomfortable, as an American.

As for this store, I think it's a bad idea to be allowing people to buy alcohol and weapons in the same place. Bad enough they buy it at 2 stores, but why encourage drinking and hunting?

  4. I will never, ever understand the gun mentality down there. Sorry... but I am so grateful glad we do not have this in Canada.

    1. Our countries were founded so differently, yes. You guys did it with a smoother transition from England whereas our forefathers came over here as a big giant f*** you to the king. lol And that entailed completely different ideas about arming oneself. Plus you guys are more polite. lol

    1. Yes...well....we kinda forgot that Missouri was still somewhat of a southern and conservative state in 1989. Our next stop on that trip was Kansas and they REALLY didn't like us there either.

As you know, I lived in Louisiana for quite some time. The strangest thing I saw there: drive through liquor stores. Just like MdD's, you placed your order and drove around. Also, you could buy a frozen daiquiri via the drive thru. They figured putting a piece of tape across the lid would stop people from drinking and driving.

    1. Drive through cocktails? Yeah that doesn't sound real safe at all. Of course the cops could rake in the dollars by setting up DUI checkpoints down the street from each one!
