Do Not Enter, You Will Not Fit

I shot this sign in the fall of 1985, as it was near my dorm at Emerson, in Boston  It's a block or so from one of the entrances to Storrow Drive, advising truck drivers to not even try to use that road due to the low bridges (I don't know if this sign is still there). Still, there were a couple of times, at night, when the dorm would shake after a loud 'BOOM' sound, because a driver smashed into the Arthur Fiedler Footbridge behind 100 Beacon Street's dorm.  On one of those occasions, I saw the trailer of a semi completely fall apart.  So yeah, Do Not Enter, You Will Not Fit.

It's funny how some truck drivers won't heed the sign thinking they can make it somehow. Those signs are there for a reason haha

    1. I know. Russell's had more than his fair share of 'OMG can I fit under that?' on regular roads, and he avoids all parkways because of the lower bridges. To be fair, all the accidents I heard were at night so I'm assuming the drivers just didn't see the 'trucks prohibited' signs!

I've only seen a big rig not make it under a bridge once and I was surprised at how they crumble like tin foil and get stuck! You would think the drivers would know..

    1. I was surprised too...both the sides of the trailer I saw had fallen out to either side and the roof of it came down in the center.

  4. Yeah, we have a couple of low bridges here too; every year some idiot tries to squeeze under... unsuccessfully. Hubby drives a truck and they are supposed to know which routes they can take! Doh! Love that sign!

    1. It doesn't happen here that often, but there was one in Washington State last year that hit the bridge and the whole roadway collapsed into the Skagit River, including a couple cars that had people in them but everyone survived.

  5. That would have scared me waking up like that!

    1. As I recall, the accidents didn't happen real late...but we were students and up anyway. I don't think I ever went to bed much before 1 AM on a regular basis in those days.

  6. My husband is always really careful to follow the routing given him for just that reason. You just never know and you really don't want to get in a tricky spot and not be able to get out...or worse stuck.

    1. Russell is too! He is an extremely careful driver, as I know your hubby is too. And he always remembers to ask about bridges if he gets sent somewhere new.

  7. That's funny. I can't fully blame the truckers. The sign is a bit odd - looks more like a challenge to me - like you might just make it if there's no debris atop your truck.

    Cheers, JoJo.

    1. The sign makes it look that way, but those footbridges are super low...Usually they survive where the trucks do not.

  8. My boyfriend is a mover and I guess a couple of months ago they lost the tops to one of their trucks because of this problem. To be fair, he told me that there wasn't a sign.

    1. Mine snagged a wire and pulled a whole pole down a couple years ago, but he was determined to be not at fault b/c the town wasn't maintaining the poles and there was no sign that said trucks weren't allowed!

  9. Greetings human, JoJo,

Ah yes and I've seen similar signs over here in England. A low bridge warning sign and the double-decker bus stuck under it with the top deck sliced off.

    Pawsitive wishes,

  10. Hi Penny! I would imagine that is a bit treacherous for anyone opting to sit upstairs on the bus!!!
