The End of the Line

July 2 was our last day on the road.

I shed a few tears upon seeing this sign.  I never thought I'd see the day when I moved back.

Nothing to shoot pics of on the Mass Pike either, but by the time we got off at 495, and then 25, we were stuck in bumper to bumper 4th of July traffic going on Cape for the long weekend.

This is the train bridge in Buzzards Bay, that stays in the up position to allow boat and ship traffic through the Cape Cod Canal, but lowers to let the trains across.

What an amazing journey and we had the best time.  I wish we could do it again!

A New York State of Mind

Only two more states left....

The goal was to get to Albany by nightfall, having left Ohio early that morning.

It would have been fun to stop here too, since the one and only time I ever got to Niagara Falls was when I was 10.

I've traveled the NY Thruway a couple of times and there is nothing, and I mean NOTHING interesting to shoot photos of.

President Eisenhower was the one who caused our interstate system to be built in the 1950's.  It's over 50 years later and they, along with the rest of our infrastructure, are deteriorating at an alarming rate.

Lake Erie, Cleveland and Pennsylvania

We stayed at a hotel in Ohio that was only about 6 blocks from Lake Erie, so we did venture down there to check it out before we hit the road the next morning.  These inland, fresh water seas are a sight to see.

As cool as it was to check out the beach at Lake Erie, we both admit to an 'Oh crap' moment when we realized we had to haul our hot, sweaty asses back up those stairs to the car, as it was a very hot, humid morning.  lol

Russell very sweetly offered to get off the highway since the museum was right there, but I knew that it'd take  HOURS to see the place, so I opted not to stop, as we were hoping to make it through all of New York State that day.  I'll get back there someday.

I missed the entering PA sign too.  There's a teeny tiny sliver of PA that separates Ohio from NY State and which abuts Lake Erie.

Illinois, Indiana & Ohio

I was now entering states that I'd been to twice before.  The only new states I added to my "Total States Visited" list were Idaho, Montana, South Dakota and Minnesota.

We were also now entering Toll Country.

We left a little later this day because we wanted to get to Chicago in the mid-morning, after rush hour.  This is a rest area and restaurant over the highway.

I think this is the John Hancock Tower that my dad took me up in when we had a 5 hour layover between trains, on the trip home from Milwaukee in 1980.

We lost our final hour when we crossed into the Eastern Time Zone between Illinois and Indiana.

I bet this company's business was booming this summer with the horrible heat and humidity the midwest experienced!!

I didn't see any planes making this X in the sky but I thought it was pretty cool.
