More Salem & Surprises!

I wanted every one of them!  Alas, I didn't buy any.

This was easily my fave gift shop.  I only got a shot glass and some postcards.  And 2 fridge magnets.

But when I do go back, I'm getting this one!

Cute restaurant!

More wooden buildings in this part of town.

We were disappointed that the House of the Seven Gables was fenced all the way around it.  You had to pay to access the grounds and house and we just didn't have the time.   The oldest part of the house dates to 1667 and Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a book of the same name.  I have never read it but it sounds intriguing.

Across the street.

Loved this place.  The red was really more of a rose.

Salem Common.  We thought this was where the witches were hung, but as it turns out and which I found out later, there is a place called Gallows Hill, and we didn't see that when we were there because it's not located in this part of town.

We had a lovely day together, although I had to be on the road by 1:45 to get back through Boston as quickly as possible.  We exchanged some gifties in the parking garage! I gave them some Cape Coddy things for them and their 2 kids, and they gave me:

A Canada puzzle, chocolate Toonie (which I can't bring myself to eat!), stickers, a mug, a smiley rock painted by their daughter Amelia....

Moriah had asked me if there was anything specific I wanted, and I told her how much I regretted not getting an Inukshuk in all the times I visited Vancouver Island.  She looked around and couldn't find one that she liked, so she & the kids selected stones from the beach at St. Martin's, New Brunswick, and made me one!!!  I love it and it's WAY better than a store bought one!

And finally, the most awesome gingerale I've ever had.  I believe she said it's only available in the Maritimes and it's bottled in Bruce's hometown.

A great day indeed!!

  1. Never seen that ginger ale. Salem really looks great, I would love to visit. I am sorry you didn't get to see where the witches were hanged. I thought witches were normally burned, think they were in England. Never seen the chocolate twonie either. I wouldn't want to eat it either.

  3. Nice to see those Canadian influenced items. I think we have made some Inukshuks, too. Artists used to create them and sell them at English Bay. At least a few years ago in the summer. Great photos JoJo. I think we had to read The House of Seven Gables at school, but I didn't like it. I find some colonial writing tedious.

  4. For whatever reason, I canot get Google Chrome to load today so I am on the slow IE. Hence this global reply.

Jo - Moriah said that the gingerale is only available in Eastern Canada. I examined the label and it's a Canada Dry product anyway. I was surprised.

Kate - I should've gotten it but it was too hard to reach and the shopkeep wasn't too forthcoming with help.

DG - I find ALL colonial readding t4edious. Although I do like Hawthorne so I'm willing to try 7 Gables. I plan on visiting Concord soon, home of Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott and I want to say Ralph Waldo Emerson, none of whom I have had any desire to read.

  6. Glass art is my favorite.
Too bad you didn't get a closer look of the House of Seven Gables, but looks like a fun, full day otherwise.

    Have a nice weekend, JoJo.

Love the glass baubles - and New Brunswick (Monkton) is where I wound up on 9/11, which was a bit of a surprise 'cause we were heading for Charlotte, North Carolina.

  8. Looking at your photos of some lovely old houses and buildings was like taking a trip back in time.
Love the colorful Witches globes or glass balls. I never quite understood if they were supposed to be for witches or if they were supposed to ward off witches or protect one from a witches evil spell ?

I vaguely remember reading the book "The House of the Seven Gables" can't really remember much about the book, other than it seemed to be a little creepy. But most of the books I read back in high school for book reports, have long been forgotten. Might be a good idea for me to get the book from my library and give it another read. Only this time in earnest. :D

    1. I had to look it up but they are supposed to ward off evil spirits & witches. However, I guess because most witches practice the 'do no harm' Wiccan witchcraft, they would also put them in their own homes to ward of evil spirits too.

I have to be honest...a lot of books that are considered 'classic literature' are dry and boring!

    1. It was hard, believe me. I wanted everything in that particular shop. I could have easily dropped hundreds of dollars in that town!
