Snowmageddon 2014

Boy did we get walloped with a blizzard on January 2 & 3.  A classic winter Nor'easter.  It started early the morning of the 2nd and luckily as snow and not freezing rain and ice, like last February.  It snowed all day and howled all night with wind.  Fortunately there were no power outages because the snow wasn't heavy enough to take down limbs and lines.  We woke up on the 3rd to massive drifts and accumulations of over a foot.

Had to shovel just to get out the front door!

Sun peeked out briefly, but it remained cloudy and windy for quite awhile.

My car!

Good thing we didn't need the generator...it would have required some serious work to get inside that shed.

Coneheads!

A few hours after I took these, we decided to go back out and continue shoveling the driveway.  It's a short driveway, but covered in 2 feet of snow it seems like miles long.  Two guys in a pick up truck with a plow happened by and offered to do our driveway for $25.   It was a total win-win.  They made some quick coin for 5 minutes of work, and we didn't have to kill ourselves shoveling.  They cleared in front of our mailbox as well.  We gave them $30.  Worth. Every. Penny.

  1. Welcome to Winnipeg!!! ;) Glad you didn't lose power or have any trouble... we also had two storms in the past two weeks; more snow that we've had in decades.

  2. Worth every penny is damn right! We got about 8", but it was -11 this morning and the cars weren't that anxious to start, though they finally gave in.
Love this set of shots. I've always loved the snow piling like that on roofs. Reminds me of puff pastry.

  3. Hi JoJo,

We have been watching your ongoing winter storms over here in Britain. It's so cold over there that even Winnipeg is noticing how cold it is :)

Your photos most graphically depict the scene. And good to know about that win win situation.

  4. It's kinda hard to believe we had this much snow a few days ago...the temp is now 50 and it's raining and most of the snow is already gone!!!

  5. Thank you for your comment! Happy New Year to you too!

That is some amazing snow! Where I am now is in the north of Sweden and it's raining!! It's so strange for this time of year. Usually it's like your pictures! I'm glad at least it didn't cause too many problems. We had some storms and floods in the UK over christmas and some people had no power at all over the holidays! Luckily we were safe!

  6. Oh JoJo, this isn't funny. But I'm laughing at that first graphic addressed to Massachusetts. I'm sorry. I hope Snowmaggadon ceases asap.

    Sunshiney thoughts from California.

  8. Glad to see you were able to get out, I wish a truck with a plow drove by our house when we were shoveling the driveway. We didn't get as much snow in the Midwest as you did, but we made up for with the crazy cold weather. It felt like -47 all day today. You took a great collection of pictures, I love the snowed covered pine tree. Stay warm.
    Happy New Year!

  9. Brrrr! It makes me shiver just to think about those temps. I'm a southern gal, born in Messina, Sicily, grew up in Southern California, lived in Trinidad in the West Indies and have resided in Southern Florida for about 25 years now. Think I'd turn blue in temps below 60.
Though I must admit that your snow photos do make for some interesting and also some pretty pictures.

    1. I didn't know you were born in Sicily and lived in Trinidad! That's so cool! Yes I think you would die up here although I hear it's cold in FL too.

  10. LOL at that first image, JoJo! :-) We got a bunch of snow where I am (just north of the Bronx), maybe as much as you (though it didn't look anywhere near as purty). I'm grateful for the warmer days, yesterday and today, and all the rain that melted a LOT of the snow...though now we're looking at arctic temps for tomorrow! :-(

    1. If you are just north of the Bronx, does that mean you live in Yonkers?

  11. I know snow is a pain, but it is so beautiful :) LOL at the first pic - is he the Mayor that has only been in the job 2 days? Talk about being thrown in at the deep end!

I've been watching your weather over there, and we've been having storms and floods over here ........... so I'm thinking locusts and frogs next?

    1. They weren't happy about it.....But when I shoveled a potty spot for them, they ignored it and plunged into the snow. I am also really grateful that Russell volunteered to take them out at 3 AM during the height of the storm.
