Rest in Peace Davy Jones

I am completely gutted over the news that Davy Jones passed away.  I have loved the Monkees, both the TV show and their music, since I was about 4 or 5, in the late 60's.  Their music has been part of the fabric and soundtrack of my life, always. My fave tape that I listen to in my car all the time is one with alternating Monkees and Partridge Family songs. I got to see Davy, Peter and Mickey perform in 1986, both in Cohasset and at the Melody Tent in Hyannis.   I went to the latter show with my friend Jack, and we didn't have tickets.  We snuck into the show after hanging around at the back of the Tent near the tour buses before the show started.  Davy emerged from the bus and passed close enough for us to touch him.  It was a night neither Jack nor I will ever forget.

My sincerest condolences to his wife, children, family and friends.  He will be missed.

  1. I can only repeat what I said on Twitter... the little nine year old inside of me has a tiny broken heart. :(

  2. I was that bit older in the 1960s, and went to see them when they were on tour. I even screamed outside their hotel. Looking back, they were better than we thought, and turned into pretty good musicians once they were allowed to.

I even remember Davy aas a little lad ppearing in Coronation Street (a 50-year-old+ soap set in th north of England).

  3. Davy was also the Artful Dodger in the stage play of Oliver. He was quite close with Jack Wild too.

I know the Monkees got a lot of crap about their 'not playing' and not being 'a real group'. But they were all musically trained. And eventually they got their way and did play on their latter records. The "Pisces, Capricorn, Aquarius and Jones, Ltd" album is brilliant.

He was such an integral part of my tweens. Hard to believe it's been that long ago.

Another piece of my happy childhood gone; I used to LOVE The Monkees and never missed the TV show...which reminds me, I really MUST ask my school friend to give back the album of theirs she borrowed....in about 1969.

I suppose the only 'good' thing for Davey is that he hadn't been ill, and it was hopefully a swift and peaceful end. Condolences to his family and friends.

PS: My favourite Monkees song is one no one has ever heard of: 'Sometime in the morning'

  7. there's an interesting clip on YouTube from the '60s where various journalists are egging Garcia on to say that the Monkees were rubbish or whatever ...

    He wouldn't.

  8. Awwww, I have that album too. What a shock to hear that news. I'm glad I got to see him in concert a couple of times. I'd love to see the show back on the air.
