A Freezing Day at the Beach

We had some super cold weather in mid October, but that didn't stop me from going to Scusset to beach comb at low tide.  It was so nice out but boy did I regret not wearing my winter coat and gloves.  My jean jacket wasn't cutting it at all and I got so chilled it lasted all day.

I was also shocked to see the entire beach stripped of rocks.  I've never seen it that sandy.  We'd had a couple of rain storms the week before, which must've swept everything back into the bay.

Lots of seagulls and an icy cold wind that would not quit.

There was not going to be any glass to be had this day, but I walked to the breakwater and back anyway.  At least I got some nice pieces of driftwood.

But then I spied this beauty on the sand.  It would be my only piece but it is pretty high quality.

The seaweed was all clumped up in big piles.  I've never seen that before either.

Even on top of one of the jetties.

Very choppy.

Have I mentioned how cold and windy it was?  Can't tell by these pics but I was walking into the wind to get back to the parking lot and my face was frozen by the time I got to the car.

I guess if Scusset's going to be that clean for awhile, I should probably try to hit up my secret spot soon.  But the beach is always changing and evolving, so hopefully the sand will wash back to sea to reveal the rocks and glass.

  1. It's that cold Atlantic wind, JoJo. I enjoyed the photos though, and I do like it when it's brisk. However a frozen face isn't good - hope you had something warm to drink after - cocoa or coffee or tea? That green glass must have been waiting just for some hardy soul who would brave the chill. . .

    1. Thank you! I didn't even think to make something warm to drink that day. I usually only have my one cup of coffee in the morning. Never occurred to me to make something warm. Not even soup!

  2. It really was well swept wasn't it? Glad you found one piece you liked anyway. If it was that cold I am surprised you carried on walking.

    1. Well I'm pretty determined when it comes to glass. If it had just been cold but not windy, I would've walked down the other way to the Sagamore Beach side. Still with all that sand it would have been futile. Not much glass.

    1. It really is! I'm curious to head down there maybe this week if possible and see if the rocks are back yet.

Gorgeous! That first picture with the water and clouds is my favorite. They look almost purple. It's deceiving, it looks like a warm summer day. Not!

  5. I love the beach. You are so lucky to be able to walk the beach anytime you like. You live in a beautiful area and now the tourist are gone it must be a lot better.

    1. Oh it's WAY better with the tourists gone, that's for sure. We have the roads and bridges back, as well as the beaches.

  6. Hey JoJo,

Always appreciate your photos. The beach can be quite the place of solitude as winter gets closer. A cold, windy day. It was in the early seventies Fahrenheit over here in parts of the UK.

    1. Thanks Gary! I probably wouldn't have been so miserable had I worn my winter coat and perhaps a scarf. But I totally underestimated the wind chill down there. Overall I do prefer a fall/winter day over a summer one at the beach.
