Waiting for The World

After all the excitement of the cruise ship Balmoral, someone on the Bourne Residents Facebook page posted that another cruise ship would be traversing the Canal in early October.  We monitored the page (by 'we' I mean the members of the Bourne Facebook page) and the Marine Traffic site obsessively all week.

This ship is called The World and is a luxury condominium cruise ship, where you can buy the room and live on it.  It's taking quite the trip, all around the world.  I wonder what the residents do when it's in port or has to go to dry dock for repairs?  Wouldn't it be awesome to have that kind of money to have a condo on a cruise ship?  The ship pulls into various ports, so I guess the people that live on it stock up on their supplies.

It finally came through on October 2, which was a very rainy and windy day.  Still, I wasn't about to miss it so down to the Canal I went, along with other obsessive photographers, to brave the weather and wait.  And I have to say, it was totally worth it.  Here she is approaching the Bourne Bridge.

It wasn't long, so much as tall.  And it looked massive in the Canal.

I had to laugh though....there we all were, out in the torrential rain and wind, waving to the ship, and all we could see was hands sticking out of the sliders waving back.  For crying out loud, man up, get out on the balcony and wave back properly!  lol

I know it's an optical illusion, but we were all collectively holding our breath to see if it would clear the railroad bridge.

Will it? Won't it?

Yes it will!

I believe their next port of call was either Newport, RI or New York City.  From there, it goes down the east coast, through the Panama Canal, down the west side of South America and close to Antarctica.  According to their 2015 Journey part of their website, the cruise started in Asia, hit India, Africa, all of Europe and even Greenland before it got to eastern Canada and USA. Wouldn't you love to take that trip??  I sure would!

    1. I would love to travel on it too. These ships have to use the tides and time their passage correctly to try and hit slack tide. Otherwise they could get stuck or scrape the bridge. I don't think any ship has done either which is pretty impressive considering how old the bridges are (1930s).

  2. That would be fun to at least spend some nights on it. I find it funny that it looks super tall but not that long. Do you think we could talk them into boatin' on down one of our Missouri rivers? Maybe the Missouri? :)

    1. You never know....they might do that trip someday! Where would they enter? New Orleans, I guess?

  3. I can imagine just living aboard ship. I would be a little too afraid of it turning into the Titanic. LOL, if I went aboard it probably would. Cool pictures and quite the spectacle. I think I would have braved the weather to see that too.

    1. I would imagine it's no fun in rough seas. They did cross the North Atlantic which is notoriously bad. I'd worry about all my stuff falling off the shelves. And given that container ship that just went down in the Caribbean, traveling permanently on a ship gives me pause too.

  4. Looks like it only just cleared the bridge. I have never heard of a condo ship. But that's exactly what it looked like, a bunch of condos. Must cost a few bucks to own one I imagine. Hope you were properly dressed for the weather, don't want you coming down with a cold.

    1. I wanted to see how much the condos cost but you have to 'contact an agent' for prices. There are studios, 1 and 2 bedroom apartments and the 3 bedroom suite. I had a raincoat on and my rain shoes. You can't catch cold from being out in bad weather anyway. Unless someone that was there who was sick coughed on me. lol

    2. I know that JoJo, but if you get wet and chilled enough, you can be more susceptible to that person with a cough or something.

It would be interesting to know what it costs wouldn't it?

  5. I've heard of this ship. How amazing to actually live on it and keep travelling the world. I wonder if they get a few days in each country to go exploring after all what's the point of just looking at things from a ship.

    1. I checked out their itinerary and it looks like they can get up to a week in each port. Jo, who commented above, sent me the info on the cost for the rooms and they run in the millions, plus $16,000 a year maintenance fee. Of course you can rent a room for $20,000 a month....
