Getting In A Last Trip to Scusset

It's that time of year again here on Cape Cod:  Tourist season.  That means come Memorial Day weekend, the beaches will be packed and parking will cost $10, unless I feel like ponying up $25 for a beach sticker.  But I don't like crowds and there is no glass to be found when they are here (they steal it all!), so I just avoid the beaches until September.  If I have a hankerin' to go to Scusset during the summer, I will pay the $10.  Or just park near the Canal and walk.

The day I went, it was somewhat foggy.  The fog was coming up off the water and the sand bars.

This part was cloudy/foggy too, but behind me it was sunny.

Glass finds were pretty good.

I so love low tide.  I was tempted to shed my shoes and socks but I'm always sorry when I do b/c I can't get the sand off my feet and it's uncomfortable inside the shoes.

Weather was a little unsettled.  When I turned my back to the water, the breeze coming off the dunes and land was hot, but when I turned to face the water, the breeze was quite cold.

Lots of small pieces today but any piece is a good find.

Li'l Lady Bug.

I was going to take this home with me but the bottom side was covered with ants.

There were tons of small dead ants at the edges of the sand bars near the breakwater.  Billions of them.  I'm seeing a lot of anthills in my yard and driveway too.

I cut my walk a little short and didn't head down to part of Sagamore Beach because I'd heard we might have thunderstorms.  That never did pan out.  These are the finds.  The pearly thing at the top is an operculum.  3 white chips, 11 brown, 4 cobalt, 2 pale green and 10 green.

  1. What is an operculum? Lots of good finds. I do so enjoy your beach pix not living anywhere near the ocean any more. I miss it. Being from the UK, we are never very far from the sea. Now I live a minimum 1,000 miles from it. That's life I suppose. Although I guess the Great Lakes are like oceans.

    1. It's the 'door' to a shell. I've got them in pearly white and brown I never noticed them when I lived here the first time but then again I also wasn't obsessed with beach combing in those days either. My friends find glass along the shores of Lake Michigan so you still have a shot where you live. I didn't realize Ontario was that far from the ocean but I guess it is. You must be right near or above Michigan?

    2. Our nearest state is New York. Buffalo is usually the first town we hit when we come to the States. If we went to Michigan it would be quite a long journey for us to get to Detroit.

    3. Oh OK, you are on that side. Definitely a long way from the coast!

    1. Thanks Phyllis! I am bummed that I won't really be able to hunt for glass again till fall, unless I get up super early and head down there before the pay booth attendant shows up.

  3. Jojo, you have lovely beach. I too love low tide but seldom get to visit the beach because we live quite far from the beach.

    1. Being born and raised here, I just can't ever live in a land-locked place. I lived on the west coast for over 20 years and my 12 in Washington were probably the farthest I ever lived from the ocean. It was a 4 hour trip to the coast, although we did have Puget Sound very close by.

  4. I love the way you photograph your glass findsbefore you pick them up, a bit like evidence in an episode of CSI!

    1. LOL They look so pretty in the sand so I decided to start shooting them. I think I started that habit last year when I found my very first marble. I felt that I needed proof that I did indeed find it on the beach. lol

  5. Whenever I see your beach photos, like the rippling sand, I want to go walk on the beach. I like the long shots of the beach, very calming. BTW, when the cool water air meets the warm land air - isn't that how storms are born? A clashing of temperatures.

    1. I thought so too...like there should've been a thunderstorm right over the beach. They were predicted for that afternoon but nothing came of it. Don't you have beaches on the Sunshine Coast you could visit?

  6. Hey JoJo,

Always fascinating with your combing of the beach and the accompanying photos. You make me feel real Canadian, eh. Suddenly, I've got the theme music from the Beachcombers rattling around in my head.

Take care, that's for shore, eh!

    Gary :)
