"Admiral! There Be Whales Here!"

A pod of right whales showed up in Cape Cod Bay late last week and hung around for quite a few days feeding and frolicking, much to the delight of the region's residents.  I was unable to get down to the beach till early yesterday morning, and I figured with my 'day late and a dollar short' luck, I'd be looking at water and nothing else.  They have been seen from Sagamore Beach up to South Plymouth, so I went to Sagamore.  While they weren't as close to shore as they were over the weekend, I did manage to get some spout pics that pleased me.  (BTW, the blog post title is a quote from Mr. Scott to Admiral Kirk in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home").

I think that's a tail, not dorsal fin.

This tail appeared so fast that I barely had a chance to get off a shot.  Plus I was really far away and it was hard to tell what it was.

Last one, as they all moved far out into the Bay.

Scusset breakwater as seen from Sagamore Beach.

Like I wasn't going to look for beach glass while I was there!  This was an amazing find.  It's a very unusual shade of blue.

Despite being about 8:15, it was very warm in the sun.  Winds were calm.

Nice piece of cobalt!

Sagamore Beach glass finds.

  1. How great. Sorry you didn't get to see them closer. I have tried taking dolphin pix with zero success so you did very well. That is my favourite Star Trek movie when they take the whales back in time. Good glass finds. Particularly love the green

    1. Thanks! That's my fave Star Trek too. Well actually I was never a fan of the franchise except for that film....my cousin lured me to see it in the theatre by telling me it was shot in San Francisco (where I was planning to move at that time). I'd like to go on a whale watch this summer out of Plymouth or PTown.

    3. Yes it was exciting! I wish I'd gotten better pics over the weekend but it was really cool to see them, even far away.

  2. Love to see whales! I used to see gray whales when they were migrating when I lived in Calif.

    1. I went to Bodega Head once and stood on the cliffs to watch but only saw one spout that time....and the fog was standing up high off shore and we literally watched it race in and engulf the cliffs within minutes. That was pretty neat to see, but visibility was too low so we left! Where in CA did you live?

  3. It's exciting to spot whales, even on my computer screen.
How do you find such unusual colors? That's a beautiful blue.
    Hugs.

    1. Thanks! Well being short, I am closer to the sand so it's easier to spot the glass. You are short too, so I bet you'd do well too. But I also 'put my beach glass eyes on' and get so focused that I can find them.

I've never seen a whale in person before, that's amazing. I get to see dolphins around here throughout the summer. They're just so much fun to watch but I can never get a decent picture of them. One day.

    1. I'd love to see a dolphin. I saw some harbour porpoises in the San Juan Islands, WA from a ferry. Seeing whales in the wild is a magical experience. That's why I am 100% against Sea World.

    2. However, Sea World in fact do a lot of good for whales etc. through research programmes.

    3. That aspect of Sea World is fine but they need to stop the marine shows immediately, and no longer obtain orcas or dolphins for future shows.

    4. But it's the shows that fund the research. It costs a lot of money to keep the animals in the right kind of environments.

    5. But after seeing orcas in the wild, I just cannot stand to see them performing for bits of fish. It truly nauseates me. Monterey Bay Aquarium does tons of research w/o marine shows, and they get lots of visitors that fund it with the admission and gift shop. Sea World could transition to an Aquarium only w/o keeping captive whales and dolphins.

    6. I am not sure, but I am under the impression Monterey Bay get other funding too, they would not get enough from their visitors I don't think. I guess it's a subject we are going to have to agree to disagree on JoJo

    1. Thanks! I haven't heard if they are still around or seen any new pics so I think I got them on the last day. Talk about lucky!!!

  7. SO incredibly jealous of your treks to the beach! I'm not that far from our coast, but I just never seem to be able to get to it. Sigh..... Thanks for your comment on my blog re: the Bloglovin' link; I think that it's OK because to follow on Bloglovin', you would click on the button I now have on the right side bar. They make you do that post so that you can get set up. I can see how that would be confusing. I'll edit that post. Ciao!

    1. Hi Heather! You should make the time to get to the coast! It's awesome. I'm not sure what Bloglovin is...I clicked on the link but wasn't sure what it does...I would get emails when you updated? Cause you pop up on my blogger dashboard too.

    2. It's just another way to follow blogs on the interwebs. I follow some blogs on Blogger, some via email, some on Bloglovin, etc. Since my blog is already on your reading list, you wouldn't need to do anything else. Man, I would give just about anything to get to the coast. I haven't been to the beach in about four years, and it's KILLING ME!! Sis and I have sea water in our veins; her work schedule is nothing like mine so she is able to sneek away occasionally w/hubby and dogs. I try very hard to be happy for her and not be jealous!

  8. Amazing shots of the whales, especially considering how quickly they breach the water's surface and disappear again. They're usually gone in the blink of an eye.

You really scored on the beach glass, JoJo. Guess it was your lucky day. :)

    1. Thanks! Any beach glass score is a lucky day. I haven't been out hunting for it as much this spring and by the end of the month I'll either have to pay to park or buy a beach sticker. But the beaches are too crowded in summer so I pretty much stay away.
