Bourne on the 6th of July

Last weekend I got it in my head that going to Newport, RI would be a good thing to do.  It was a Sunday morning.  I don't know why I thought it would be deserted but I did, and when I got down there not only did I get lost, but traffic was a horror show.  Ticked off, I headed home without stopping in town to see anything.  I sulked for about an hour at a missed photographic opportunity, then decided to walk downtown, with only the intent to go to the bank and post office.  I ended up wandering around & shopping for two and a half hours!  It was a gorgeous day.  Very warm but the breeze was delicious.  Just 2 days past Independence Day, decorations and flags were still prominently displayed.

The bowling alley.  I learned to bowl here when I was 10 and my dad and uncle took my cousins and me. It was duck pin at the time but I think might be ten pin or candlepin now.

New this summer is the Crooked Row Farms stand.  Profits go to the Bourne Food Pantry.

This gas station is near my house and I never noticed the 'Established 1932' on the sign till today.  The station itself doesn't really look all that old, so I assume the current building replaced the original one.

I've walked by The National Marine Life Center, Inc. countless times and decided to drop in.  I knew they rehabilitated marine mammals but I wasn't sure if this was like an aquarium or what.

So I went in and it's a small museum that displays info on marine mammals.  Like this sea turtle egg exhibit.

They have closed circuit TV showing the seal pups and sea turtle that are currently being rehabbed.  The public is not allowed access to them because they cannot risk the animals getting used to humans and human voices.

Some of the seals that have been rehabbed.

This little guy was in a tank in the museum.

A painted right whale with lots of postcards and stickers.

The whale's name is Always.  He is, apparently, sending postcards to his fellow right whale friends.

I got this little cutie for my stepdaughter who adores penguins.

  1. The local museum in NC had lots of turtles being rehabbed all the time. There are lots of museums in NC and SC which are strong in preservation. All fascinating. They have aquariums too with local fish and plants not to mention walks over the wetlands. Love the postcards, someone has a good sense of humour.

    1. I thought that whale was very creative! Probably one of my faves that I've seen around the Cape. I used to go to the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA quite a bit when I lived there. These places do such great work!

  2. Looks like it was a wonderful afternoon spent exploring downtown.
Would love to be able to find such a cute, little, soft penguin toy for my grandkids - it is so adorable. :)
Will have to come back to your blog a bit later as my PC is acting up and not responding well . . . that and my hubby wants to run some diagnostics on it and it's acting like it could really use it !

    1. My computer is having issues too. As I write this, it's closing in on 7 hours since I started running the defrag on it. No idea when it's gonna finish, if ever. If you want some of the pengies let me know because they had a ton of them. They were like $6 each.

    2. My hubs figured out that Windows was upgrading things and downloading stuff and it went on forever. So guess that was the reason my computer was not responding well. Today I was able to actually view all of this post's photos and enjoy them . :)
I'll shoot you an email regarding the cute penguins.

  3. Ohhh purty petunias! I looooves petunias! <3

    You take great pics!

Decades of hypothyroidism is giving me a bit of an "essential tremor" (thats what its called) and my photos can turn out unexpectedly blurry, especially when I'm tired. I have had to redouble my efforts to concentrate and hold the camera still, and as a result... ask myself, "do I really need to take a photo of this?" And so I take photos of things I really want to remember, rather than everything in my path! I take about half as many as I used to, except at the comics conventions,

    Love your photos, always!

  6. What a cute turtle! And that penguin stuffed toy, so fuzzy! I love walking around inside museums/exhibits, too. I haven't even gone to Monterey Bay Aquarium, or the Steinhart Aquarium, or the California Academy of Science... uh oh. I need to go soon. LOL How can I live in the Bay Area without going to those??? I'm bad.
