Ruby Beach

My longtime readers will probably remember some of these pictures that I posted in the spring of 2010, from my trip to Ruby Beach on the Olympic Peninsula.  I had hoped to find beach glass out there but the Pacific Coast doesn't yield much glass at all (but for Glass Beach in CA).  It was totally worth the 4 hour drive though.

Lots of sea stacks.

You cannot swim at this beach and it's not a good idea to turn your back to the ocean either due to the many beach logs that wash on shore.   They will kill you.

I sat on that log (you can see my jacket and pack) for close to 2 hours, just enjoying the sound of the waves and soaking up the March sun, which was warm but not uncomfortable.

The ocean was really percolating that day.

Ruby Beach is so named because of the teeny bits of crushed rubies that give the sand a cool rose colour.  I didn't see it in the sand here, but I did see the pink sand on the beach down at Kalaloch, where I was staying on this trip.

Here is a photo of the ruby sand taken at Kalaloch so you can see what it looks like.   I did take a bunch of sand with me from both beaches when I left and still have it.  If I ever get a microscope I will try and see if there are any ruby bits!

  4. I love the sea stacks! I live in Florida, and our beaches are just flat.

  5. I've never seen the ruby sand, JoJo, so very interesting. I've been to Agate Beach in Oregon which had similar beach formations and huge rocks right at the beach as if left by the glaciers.

I learn a lot about the beaches from you. I like the west coast beaches, they're so interesting to walk along.

One of my favorite vacations was a trip to the Olympic Peninsula. Ruby Beach was awesome. The clouds were gray, and they melted into the sea. The waves were wild and violent. Very cool. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Happy A to Z to U!

  9. Hi all! Thanks! Yes, I do love my beaches. They say if a person is born near the sea, they must always live near the sea and I agree with that.
