The Unst Bus Shelter

The other night on PBS, there was a cool show called The Islands of Great Britain, and they started in the Shetlands, which are way above Scotland in the frigid North Sea.

This windswept, treeless archipelago is mystical and peaceful, and home to the adorable Shetland pony....
....and also home to the Unst Bus Shelter. This charming little bus stop is located on the northernmost inhabited island of Unst. It even has it's own website!

You can read the history of how the bus shelter came to be, here.

No one ever steals the stuff inside the shelter. Clearly they are more civilized in the Shetlands than most of the rest of the world.

I just added one more thing to my ever growing bucket list!

  1. I've seen this on shows here too..I have to say while I love the idea, it wouldn't last 5 minutes in Kidlington..guess it shows how strong a sense of community they have up there that everyone is involved in keeping the bus shelter going

  2. Very cool. I'll have to see if I can get there for a weekend! Maybe next spring. I imagine it's going to get really cold in that part of the world, really quickly :-)

  3. Beautiful.

Do they change the decor, or is there more than one loaded bus stop?

That is so awesome. I love the pink design. You would want to catch the bus just so you could have a stay in the shelter.

  7. I seriously want to go see this. I've always been fascinated by the Shetland Islands (any islands really, as long as they aren't tropical).

  9. The Shetlands are so far north.I'd love to visit,as long as I could visit the western islands further south as well.I would be curious how much Norse blood is in that Scottish blood or perhaps it is the other way around.
