Craft Whore: Because I'll Try Anything Once

I'm a complete and total craft whore. I'll try anything once. I know, you're shocked.

That's why I love, love, LOVE the Craft Kit of the Month Club through Creative Home Arts Club. There was also a kit of the month club that I did in about 2002 or so, but they went out of business. What I love about the kits is that you get to try your hand at all different kinds of craft projects without having to invest loads of money into the supplies. Everything you need (except scissors, glue, ruler, etc) is included in the kits. The only ones I have been unable to attempt are knitting and crochet. But I'll try anything at least once....sometimes with mediocre results and sometimes with great results!

For example, one of the 2002 kits was for a birdhouse that I had to assemble, paint and decorate. Unfortunately the directions did not state that it was to be an indoor, decorative birdhouse. After 3 days in our apple tree, it fell apart and the birds ate the decorative corn off the front. So that one went in the trash.

Here's a slideshow of various Craft Kit of the Month club projects, and some other crafts I made from kits. Muir Woods papercraft kit was very difficult to assemble, as each tree had to be delicately cut out and then assembled. The paper camera was another hard project and that took about 3 months of weekends to complete. It really works too, but I haven't used it. All the gears and such are made from paper. Also, there is a wind chime birdhouse that I painted, but the flowers that decorate it are stickers. I didn't paint them. My stained glass attempt is a bit cattywampus but it was my first try. The tray was already assembled, I just painted and stenciled it.

Sorry if there are repeats of things you've seen before. Hope you like!

  2. Such lovelies, indeed! Love the dragons. "With money, a dragon, without money, a worm" - Asian proverb. Your home MUST be the best showcase stopper on the block!!!! I don't like to "should" on people, but you should try knitting & crochting. Ha. Cheers JoJo!!

  3. you have been a talented busy little bee - i especially loved the birdhouses and the purses, probably 'cos i love birds and purses, but the rest are also amazing

however i'm the same as diane - it took me a whole school year to make one apron in domestic science - having said that i can knit (and i still do) and crochet (not done it in years though)

  4. Thanks guys!

I have a weird dyslexia when it comes to knitting and crochet. I can't even work with hemp doing the different knots/macrame. I can't figure out which way my hands are supposed to go. It's like when I tried to learn to play banjo. I went to my 2nd lesson and played the bit I was to practice. My teacher said I was not only reading the music upside down, but backwards. That was my last lesson.

  5. Well, JoJo, no one can do everything, but you can certainly do a lot. What's more, you bother to do the things you buy.

I have stacks of tapestry work that's been waiting for years to be done. The footstool cover was eventually supplanted by just stretching fabric across, the dolls house cushion and carpets will probably wait forever, though I did complete my first effort - a large picture of a cottage in longstitch. When I had my kitchen redone 10 years ago it came down, and now there's nowhere to put it, so there's no point in finishing the other one I bought.

  6. Well, Val, you have a very delicious bobby...I mean 'hobby'....which is posting awesome slideshows and piccies on your blog of Vincent. And that takes up your spare time. ;) I am sure your craft projects would've gotten made if there was no such thing as the VDO blogosphere. :D

  7. Wow, I wish I could get back into crafts. I used to be into them in high school and for a short time when my eldest granddaughter was about six. Since then, however, nothing. I think it's because I'm lazy. lol

I shall live vicariously through your efforts. ;-)

  8. Wow. That stuff is fabulous! I can't believe you did so many different things!! I am a huge chicken. Not sure why, but I don't try too many things.

Maybe I will change my tune though. That slide show is inspiring.

    Thanks for sharing,
    pf

  11. Excellent bailout for Val, JoJo! I, too, could accomplish a great deal more in my life if it weren't for Vincent blogsphere. But, I so enjoy blogging. I could/have spend/spent hours blogging. I could complete some of the things on my bucketlist if I wasn't blogging so much. Ya think? Hahahaha. Cheers Jo!!

  12. Music Wench - That's OK, I travel vicariously through my friends. ;p

PF - Sagan's doing really well! The stitches were taken out last week and the wound is healing up nice. Once the fur grows in we won't even notice it. Thanks for asking!

Tess & Diane - I firmly believe that everyone is creative in their own way. You just need to find an outlet for it. Oh wait, that's what The Valentine Cat is for.

BBG - If it weren't for Facebook, I'd probably get even MORE done.
