Town Neck & The Sandwich Marina

The day after our 70 degree warm up was about 30 degrees colder, but still beautifully clear.  So it was off to Town Neck in Sandwich to take a few pics, but no beachcombing due to too many rocks and high tide.

Tugboat leaving the Canal.  Scusset Beach is on the other side of that line of jetties.

I thought my friend Ann made these as she was at the beach the day before but she didn't.

High tide so the breakwaters were submerged.

Scallop shell still joined at the hinge.

VERY high tide this morning.

Town Neck is still really ravaged from erosion.  The beach grass that was planted last year is still working out so far, but it continues to have the sand swept off during storms.  And then deposited in the Canal and on Scusset Beach.

This is about as far as I dared to walk on Boardwalk because I don't like the water being that close. While I have crossed this hundreds of times in my life, I'm still afraid I'll fall off or get pushed off.  I never have, but it still scares me a little to go out over open water like that on a narrow bridge with no handrails and people walking towards me.

Normally you can still see the marshes at high tide but today it was super high.

Then I drove over to the Marina.  That white building is Fisherman's View Restaurant that just opened.  The design is in keeping with the Coast Guard station that's also in the marina area.  See that fishing boat?  It was docked and unloading fresh fish and seafood to the restaurant.  You cannot get fresher than that!!!

 Very choppy in the Canal.

It's quite large with a killer view of the Canal and extremely popular, as I've heard the food is top notch.  There is always a pretty long wait to get in!  We haven't been because sadly, I can't eat anything on the menu except cornbread.  I miss being able to eat shellfish!  But my friends who have gone posted pics of their meals with rave reviews.

This is the new Harbormaster's Office.  It's huge!

The town seal is three ships with eagle heads and the motto translates to "After so many shipwrecks, a haven".

  1. Your photo depictions make me want to go to the beach for a stroll, but I don't think it would be the same here. Or at least I'd have to drive a ways to find such solitude.

    1. I have to say I wasn't that impressed w/ Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Too many people! You're right...you'd probably have to drive to Big Sur!!

    2. Venice Beach is a great place to go if you want to see weird people. I usually take guests there when they come to visit because, like Hollywood, it's one of those must sees though I'd likely not go to those places on my own.

  3. That's an uplifting motto, and it does appear a haven.
Thanks for the tour, JoJo. Stay safe and warm (or warm enough).

    1. Thanks Robyn! It's funny but that's the first time I ever bothered to look up the motto. I'm 52, from that town, and never paid attention to it. hahaha

    1. Thanks! I can't believe I got that scallop shell home, and cleaned, without it breaking! I have it on my kitchen window sill.

So cool! And what a drag that you can't eat shellfish. I would die! Probably not really but it would suck big time. I would totally walk that Boardwalk every chance I got! I couldn't wait for Lake Michigan to freeze so I could walk on it. A little iffy since it never fully froze. :) Weird that they don't have hand rails but sorta' cool. Again I say to you. You live in such a cool place and every time I think, man, I need to move there. :) Beautiful post.

    1. That's Karen! It's definitely very pretty and bucolic but not near as dramatic as Washington which I still prefer, scenery-wise. When we were kids the Boardwalk wasn't as maintained as it has been the past 20 years, so you'd be riding your bike across and come across a missing board and hope to god you didn't fall off when you hit it. lol This area was literally Russell's front yard.

    1. There's a place in Rhode Island called Point Judith and almost the entire beach are these rock cairns that people make. It's pretty cool. Look it up on google images. I want to get down there to see it soon.
