Fairhaven Architecture, Part 1

Fairhaven is an architecture lover's dream.  When Diane, the kids & I went to Fort Phoenix, we passed by this huge cathedral and I couldn't wait to take pics of it!!  It's the Unitarian church and I wish it had been open so I could see the inside.

That's my car parked in front of it, for scale purposes.

 The stonework is breathtaking

Flying buttresses!

I assume this is a copper door.  The patina is lovely and the detail is exquisite.

This is next door and I think serves as the church's offices.

This whole neighbourhood is full of old homes and almost all of them have plaques on them showing the approximate or exact date of construction with the historical family name on them.  A lot of them were the homes of ship captains and built in the mid 1800s.

This is a private residence!

  1. Magnificent cathedral - such elaborate stone work and ornamentation. Breathtaking.
I adore that photo you took of the columns against a perfect blue sky - each column adorned with a different design - wow, such detail. I love architectural photos like that and if I had the wall space I'd have a whole gallery of pictures featuring amazing elements such as those in your photos.

Also love that wonderful Tudor style house. I see it too has 3 ornate roof top columns - chimney stacks I would imagine. Attention to detail was certainly not spared in its construction.

    1. Isn't it incredible? When we drove by it last summer I was blown away. Believe me I could have spent hours photographing every last detail. There are more pictures on my FB page. It was really hard to choose what to post here. Like I said, I shot over 200 pictures in 3 hours. lol

  4. Fantastic views, JoJo, and that brought back memories of Notre Dame in Paris! I couldn't get enough of all the detail, either. You did a great photo study of this cathedral. I had to look at all the photos larger to see the fine detail. Excellent.

    1. I, too, thought of Notre Dame. I could see so much of its influence, esp. with the flying buttresses and gargoyles. There are way more pics of it on Facebook.

The cathedral looks like it's been shipped over from England ;0)

Holy amazing, JoJo! These are just gorgeous. It looks like something you'd see overseas, not in the states. That church is just stunning. Wow! Thanks for sharing those. CT, right?

    1. No, this is Southeastern Massachusetts, about 45 miles west of where I live. I can't believe that no one has ever mentioned this area of Fairhaven as being a must-see in this area. It's definitely a well kept secret and hidden gem!

Thanks also for sharing what you did on my blog. I'm sorry you've had to fight the same beast. Keep faith. You aren't alone.

    1. I would love to know how long it took to make each element and then build the cathedral. I'm assuming it went up in the 1800s.
