A Happy Birthday!

Had a GREAT Thanksgiving and birthday weekend!!!  I'm hoping that 2011 broke the curse.  Isn't this card a hoot?  I got it from Holly.  I laughed and laughed!!  Does she know me or what?

My poor baby didn't get back into town till around 6:00 on Wed. night, in a driving rain and windstorm through hours of stop and go holiday traffic through Boston. He'd been up since about midnight and was exhausted from all that driving and unloading. So we just lounged around almost all day on Thanksgiving, till it was time to pick up mumsy for dinner at Hearth & Kettle in Hyannis.  I was surprised at how many people opt to eat out on a holiday.  We had reservations for the dinner, but there was also a buffet room and the line just to get in was out the door.

Dinner was pretty good:  Turkey, stuffing, butternut squash, mashed potatoes and peas.  Started off with corn chowdah which was sooooo good.  Russell went a different way with his dinner and got the prime rib instead of turkey & stuffing.  We were given sandwiches and apple crisp to go.  Not having to do the cleaning up afterwards was a nice treat.  After dinner we went back to mum's to chit chat for a couple hours, then we came home.

Friday was a total slug day for us both.  We did get it together long enough to go into Sandwich to do a couple errands but we were home by 1 and watching TV, playing on the computer and enjoying our time together.

Since he was leaving pretty early on Sunday morning, we celebrated my b-day on Saturday and it was awesome.  So incredible.  Woke up early but got up late, watched some TV, then went into Sandwich to the Glass Museum for the glassblower and nativity exhibits.  I will post pics from the Glass Museum trip in the next few days.  That's got to be one of my fave museums in the world.  It's bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside and photos are allowed.  The nativities were really cool but the trees with the blown glass ornaments were just stunning.  They were made by local artists and for sale.

He told me to pick one out, so I started examining each tree. I looked around for him and he was still standing in the doorway of that room, so I told him to come in and pick one with me.  I kept coming back to one in particular, when I was scanning all the different trees (one tree per artist).  Then he pointed to it and said, "I like this one, and the lines are like our lives intertwining."  I was taken aback and extremely touched by this very poetic observation, so this is the one we bought.  It was made by Sayuri Kingsbury, of West Barnstable.  Her Etsy shop is HERE.  She also makes marbles!!

On the way home from the Glass Museum, we stopped at a little convenience store and I was mooning over a street atlas for the Cape & Islands, so my squeeze bought it for me along with a couple of scratch tickets (I won $5.00!!).  I love maps and atlases.  This will make my life so much easier when I go shooting photos!

We had an early dinner out at our fave restaurant, 99, in Wareham.  When I came to visit in March, he took me out for lunch at the 99 in Mashpee on our first date, so I've come to think of it as "our place", so that's why I chose it over a new and untried restaurant.  Might as well go with what we know is always good.  I had the chicken marsala with pasta and he got his fave smothered steak tips.  We were home by 5:30 and in a food stupor, so it was an early night.  I took him to his truck at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.  The end of a magical weekend together.

Later that morning, I went into Sandwich to watch some old friends put the tree in Shawme Pond (pics to come), then picked up a birthday cake at Stop & Shop to take over to my mom's house.  I had to get the most colourful one in the bakery too.  It was yellow cake with a very light whipped icing, not the super sweet buttercream.

Had lunch & cake w/ mom .  One of her friends stopped by on her weekly, Sunday visit and it was relaxing just hanging out there and chatting with "the ladies".  I left about 4 and went over to Marsha's house for about 90 minutes....I brought the rest of the cake to share with her family.  I was home by about 6:30. Overwhelmed by the love and shout outs on Facebook too.

Oh, I'd also picked up a smaller piece of carrot cake with the most delicious cream cheese frosting.  It took me 3 days to finish it because it was soooo rich!!

My evening ended with my being able to watch The Grey Cup streaming online.  This is the Canadian Football League's "Superbowl" (although this was the 99th Grey Cup and our Superbowl has only been around since the 1960s).  My British Columbia Lions had battled back from a 0-5 start this year, right into the championship game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.  The game was being played before the home crowd in Vancouver, BC and the Lions won the Cup.  I was quite pleased!

So 2011 passed without incident and was one I won't soon forget for it's sheer awesomeness!
