Orleans, Part 1

The only two towns I had left to shoot pics of were Orleans and Mashpee.  We decided to take a drive to Orleans on one of the warm days following the storms and freezes.  Russell knows his way around from his years delivering for Coca Cola, and he took me all over the place so I could get my shots.  Our first stop was Skaket Beach on Cape Cod Bay.  Tons of ice chunks that I wasn't expecting.  I didn't realize that CCBay was frozen too.

I've seen pics on Facebook of people walking out on the ice but I wasn't about to take that kind of chance!

Then we went over to Rock Harbor, also on the Bay.

All those super heavy chunks of ice just deposited on top of the jetties.

I have never seen anything like this in person till this trip and the earlier one to Scraggy Neck.  It's amazing to see.

Entrance to the Harbor.

This was one of two ships still in the water and now stuck in the ice.  I hope their hulls don't get crushed by the ice.

The Cape is picturesque no matter what time of year it is.

Oh my gosh! I cannot believe that ice! I wouldn't walk on it either. I'd be afraid I'd slip and fall. Way too dangerous. I love how you guys drove there together and made a day of it. :)

    1. Yeah I was pretty surprised too. I had planned on looking for some beach glass at Skaket but alas....that was not to be!

  3. Those pictures made me cold! Unbelievable ice! Is that normal? Great shots to show us the carnage.

    1. We had ice like this in 2015. There was a cool satelite picture that showed the frozen water. Prolonged cold, like what we had, will freeze the salt water bays.

    1. Thank you Lady Jane! When the weather gets nicer I'd like to finally get pics of Mashpee. Were you ever go to Mashpee Commons? That's like the one and only draw there now. A lot of high end stores and restaurants. Do your friends still live there?

  5. I am staggered at the frozen salt water JoJo. I have never seen so much salt water frozen before. It is like the arctic. The Great Lakes get frozen like that but they are not salt of course. It really must have been very very cold round your way. Glad you both got out and had a good day of it.

    1. It was a surprise to see this. Like I said, I had no idea that Cape Cod Bay, which is much bigger than Buzzards Bay, would freeze. I would love to have been in the parking lot when those big chunks were being deposited somehow onto that breakwater.

    1. With my luck I would've stepped on a thin spot and gone under. I would love to have had a drone to use, for an aerial view of how far out the ice went before hitting open water.

  8. I must have been to Orleans because I have driven up to Provincetown but I am more familiar with Orlenas in France. A lovely town on the River Loire (and I've been to New Orleans!). We have been spared the ice and snow, generally in south-east England.

    1. You probably just went around the little rotary in Orleans if you went up to PTown. That's all I ever did! I never wanted to bother with the crowded beaches in summer.

  9. Hi JoJo,

Splendid photos! Such a picturesque place. Amazing and before I make an ice of myself, I shall now head back to um, tropical England.

    1. Yes, Nauset is on Part 2! It was much different on that side of the town. It was warmer and very little snow and ice.

  11. I really love the one of the post and the grasses. It would be an amazing photo to hang on the wall. Great ice photos too. I am so jealous that you got to get out and see water ice like that. Maybe I will try to get my hubby to take me for a drive soon and see what we can find too!
