Beachcombing

We are having a spate of gorgeous weather.  The snow is melting off nicely and the mild temps are going to continue for the next week.  March can be a horrible month in New England, so I'm just hoping for the best.

I haven't been to Scusset, or beachcombing, in almost a year now.  I can't believe it.  I stayed in and stitched all last year.  I won't pay to park in the summer and they continue to require payment until October 31st instead of mid September.  By that point I was too busy with the holidays then it got wicked cold.

The first thing I found was this bright green rock-like thing.  I can't tell what it is at all...I have other pics of it down below.

The tide was coming back in but there were still some sand bars.

Town Neck Beach in Sandwich continues to be ravaged and eroded by storms.  I found the sand over on Scusset, which is usually somewhat rocky.

My best hope for beach glass was up at the tide line where there were a few rocks and pebbles.

I didn't find a ton of it this time but I did score a few really nice pieces.

Hardly anyone was around and it was very peaceful.  The wind wasn't even that cold.

 Love the cobalt!

The water looked so good and clear but was ice cold.  No wading today!

Another rare 'holy grail' find, one of those flat backed glass blob thingies.

My haul for the day.  Not too bad.  A couple pieces not quite fully cooked but that's OK.

I found these 2 heart rocks practically next to each other.

This rock is very unusual and has a lot of small pits all over it.  I have no idea if it's an earth rock or something from space.  It's not magnetic.

A closer view of the top of the green thing I found.  It's slightly pliable but doesn't feel like foam.  I sent the pic to the Facebook page of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and they think it's a piece of an old buoy.

When Russell saw this side of it he was afraid I'd picked up some kind of marine poop.  lol  For the time being it's in a plastic ziplock bag until I figure it out.  It's definitely not whale ambergris.

If this nice weather keeps up I'll have to go out again!

  3. You are so lucky JoJo. If I lived that close to the beach I would be there most every day. I would find my zen listening to the waves crash the beach. It would be bliss.

    1. I would go more but I'm so exhausted from fighting the anxiety/depression/panic thing plus all my real life responsibilities that I don't have the energy to walk on the soft sand.

  4. Even though I've only seen it in photos, I've always been interested when people say they have found sea glass. And the heart rocks are so cute.

  6. You sent me to the dictionary when you used the word "ambergris". Very interesting. A few hours walking on the beach, with or without finding treasure, is always a good use of time!

    1. I originally used the word 'vomit' but decided to go with the less gross sounding name. lol It's worth a bundle if you find it but it's also illegal to own or sell.

Great minds think alike! We went to the beach too! I love the colbalt too. It's gorgeous.I keep hoping this is the end of the cold weather but our biggest storms the last few years have been in March so who knows?

    1. I need to go to another beach though. If Scusset is going to be this covered by sand, there won't be much beach glass.

  12. That beach looks so peaceful and empty. What a wonderful place for a stroll. I've haven't walked along a beach in years--at least not in the sand. I've walked along the commercial boardwalk areas, but that's not quite the same though interesting in different ways.

    1. It was AWESOME to have the place to myself! In a couple of months it'll be wall to wall people, towels, blankets, coolers and umbrellas! I tell ya though, walking on the sand really worked my leg muscles. I was feeling it the next day!

  14. I ran across your blog because of the beachcombing posts. I beachcomb all over the coast of Massachusetts. I am mainly a sheller but I pick up anything of interest. The beach I have seen with the most sea glass is Niles Beach in Gloucester, which is resident parking, but in the winter, you can probably get by without a sticker. I walked south on Niles Beach and saw lots of glass. I post about all my beachcombing and the finds (mostly shells) on my public Instagram account, which is under the name Bird Winter (bird_winter), and I invite you to come visit!
