Resin Castings

There is definitely a learning curve to this resin stuff.  For one, I've now learned that I should've sealed the paper in clear packing tape so that it wouldn't get wet and turn dark.  The only one that still looks the same as before the stuff was poured on top is the pink/orange/red/yellow piece.

For these cabochons, I used metal flowers, glitter and beads.  These came out the best.

That's a big marble on the left.  The center one is a blue bead but it was jammed so far into the mold that the resin didn't get under it so the top is flat.  The same thing happened with the glitter one on the right.

These are old watch faces and backs for the most part.  Picture isn't that great.  The top one has a cubic zirconia in the center of a decorative watch face.  Then a turtle with blue beads.  2 watch backs with paper, the one in the center right is a cupcake.  The last row is a frame charm & watch face with paper inside.

These were my failures.  I started this project slowly and carefully, mixing the right proportions of resin and hardener, stirring then letting it rest before pouring.  However by the end of this project, I was sticky, the pouring cup was sticky, the bottles were sticky and I just wanted it done.  Unfortunately this meant very sloppy mixing and pouring.  As a result, these 4 pieces never cured.  3 marbles and a square pendant, hopelessly pliable and sticky.  I had to throw them out.  There was no way to salvage them.

I'll work with it again at some point but right now I'm in no big hurry to make another mess and have it taking up all the counter space in the kitchen while it cured.  In the meantime I should probably read and/or watch some tutorials.

  1. I've been wanting to create some resin as well ... I have most of the materials, but just haven't pulled it all out (yet). But you've got some really nice pieces to work with here - look forward to seeing what comes next!

    1. Thanks. It's very messy. If I am going to pursue this medium, I'm going to need to get cups that pour w/o dripping all down the sides and on my fingers. Paper towels on the counter aren't optimum for containing the mess b/c the resin goes right through it and the paper towels stuck to the counter. I had to scrape them off.

  2. They are all attractive though even the failures. I love that blue on the last lot.

    1. Thanks! The blue marble in the last pic? It killed me to have to throw that one out. And the other two as well, but esp. the cobalt marble. I wanted to keep them but it's clear they will never every fully set.

Oh I'm so glad you posted this! Altho I think your pieces looked amazing, as always, because you're just so flippin' off the charts crafty that way. - I'm happy you shared the whole sticky, curing part. That's enough for me. I've seen these types of things on Pinterest and I thought it'd be cool but now that someone I know has actually done them and can attest to the messiness of it all, that's enough for me. And all of that precise measuring and mixing.. I like to craft to unwind and free my mind not lock it into a detailed list of do this, don't do that. Ya' know? Love this post. Thanks for the info and the heads up JoJo. :)

    1. Thank you so much! I'm glad that this post helped you decide on this craft medium. I think I'll end up just using up the supplies I have on hand and calling it good. I'm disappointed though....I so wanted to be good at this. That stuff really does get everywhere. I was transferring it from my fingers to everything I touched. It never really dries if you get it anywhere.

  5. Isn't it fun to just experiment? Sometimes the best is created by accident. Life is a learning curve.

    1. It sure is a learning curve! Not sure how much more of this particular craft that I'll do....probably just use up my supplies and call it good. lol

    1. Yes....a very sticky adventure at that. I didn't think I'd ever get that stuff off my hands. Or the counter. And the molds are all still sticky too.

  9. Even your "failures" look beautiful to me. Shame you had to toss them.

    1. That large marble in the dome was almost a failure but I was able to put a piece of paper on the bottom and it stuck to the resin. It's still very pliable though. The others were just too wet/sticky. I couldn't even dig out the marbles cause they were covered in it too.

  10. I sometimes tend to go by instinct with crafts and read the instructions later, when a problem occurs. The crafts that you did well make up for the failures. That's your tests. I admire your tenacity in a lot of these crafts. I don't know that I'd have the patience.

    1. A lot of time I don't have the patience. THat's why I don't make candles anymore. I can't stand 'hurry up and wait' and that kind of craft isn't for me. I don't mind waiting a little for glue or paint to set, but I'm just not the type of person that can actually spend 4 minutes stirring resin & hardener, then waiting another 5-10 minutes till the bubbles dissipate. I just want to mix and pour.
