Scenes from Sandwich

When I left the dam, I stopped along Grove Street before town center to snap a couple pics of this part of Lower Shawme Pond.

Couldn't resist a few snappies downtown....it's so picturesque.

Newcomb Tavern, where the British Loyalists had their meetings and did their plotting and planning around the time of the American Revolution.  I googled Newcomb Tavern out of curiosity of the history and was surprised to find this link HERE, about just how divided Sandwich was in those days. I knew that the rebels met nearby at Fessenden Tavern, now the Dan'l Webster Inn, but I had no idea just how heated things got in town.  If we were taught this history in school, I have completely forgotten it.

Looks like the Grist Mill got a new waterwheel.

Another herring run

Love this house.

Next I hopped in the car and drove up Rte. 130 out of the downtown area to take some pics of the Firemen's Memorial at the edge of Joint Base Cape Cod.

It's a memorial to 3 firemen that died in the big fire of 1938.

Turned around and headed back through town, and down to the other part of Rte. 130 to take pics of the Freeman Cemetery, which has graves dating to the early and mid 1800s.

I love old cemeteries. I was hoping to see some orbs on your photos. :) There's an old mining town here in Idaho and every time I go there and take pics in the cemetery, orbs are always in my photos. Nowhere else, just in the cemetery. :) Apparently the dead like me.. Lol.. Great photos as always JoJo. :)

    1. Thanks Mimi! Nope, no orbs, but I'm generally in the cemeteries during the day. I wonder if they'd show up better at night, but I'm not going in a cemetery at night! lol

  2. It really is mind-boggling how much our forefathers endured to birth our free country. You don't find that kind of spirit today. Thanks for bringing some of our history to us, as we're about to embark on the holiday weekend.
    Have a wonderful one, JoJo.

  3. Hi JoJo,

Yep, England calling at a ridiculous hour of the morning.

Quite the history lesson to go with your amazing photos, JoJo. Sandwich, eh, makes me want to have a picnic. The number of places over there with names from over here, good grief.

A peaceful, positive Fourth of July to you and your loved ones.

    Gary :)

    1. Hi Gary! Thank you! It does make me laugh that the Pilgrims and others fled England for religious persecution issues and then named all their new towns after English ones. Sandwich is the oldest town on Cape Cod, established 1637. I know that's relatively modern compared to Europe, but it's pretty darn old compared to the rest of the USA.
