Canal Walk

It's so nice not to have to wear layers, boots and bundle up every time you leave the house to get the mail.  And even nicer to get out and walk again.  This time I met up w/ my dear childhood pal, Sheila.  We've been best friends since kindergarten and even though she moved to Orleans when we were in the beginning of  3rd grade, we always wrote & kept in touch.  So we went for a walk on the Canal along with her son Joey.

Traps washed up on the banks.

Joe had climbed up on the retaining wall to walk along the top and his eyes got huge and he yelled, 'OHMYGOD IT'S A SNAKE!'  Sheila and I looked behind the wall in time to see this large black racer headed up in the woods.  She's convinced his 'big mouth' (her words) spooked him.  It had to be 4' long.

See the Ninja Turtles?  SQUEEE!

I loved this ribbon effect

This stump looked like a clover leaf to us!

We walked pretty far....started out in Bournedale near the Sagamore Bridge and I was surprised to see how close we got to the Bourne Bridge.

More cormorants.

We got to this point and then headed back the way we came.  We probably did 3 or 4 miles.

Where to begin? First, I love the fact that Spring is just about here. Almost. I'm painting my toenails today so that says yeah, it's here. hehehe

I love the ribbon effect too. And the clover. But holy moley on the snake. I'd have run and I owned a snake. But, seeing one in nature. Not so much!!

    1. Joe said he saw two of them behind the wall but the other stayed hidden. I was glad it was on the hill too. As Indiana Jones famously said, 'Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes."

    1. We are so lucky to have it! It's funny but I see people running and biking in Sandwich on the narrow streets that have no side walks and I wonder why they just don't head down to the Canal. It's so much safer and that's what the service roads are there for!

  3. It's lovely that you and Sheila kept your friendship strong and remained in touch with each other. All of my old school chums just stopped answering my cards and letters and slowly disappeared behind the mountain of time (that of course was before the days of facebook and cell phones).
Having a friend to walk with does make the walking more fun and the distance seems to fly by.

That was an impressive black racer. I've seen a couple around my house but they weren't nearly that long.

    1. Oh trust me if I saw a snake that big in my yard you'd be able to hear me screaming all over the world. Yes it is way cool that Sheila & I never lost touch. It's unusual for children as young as we were when she moved to write regular letters but we always did. Funny thing is, she didn't move that far away from me but it never occurred to either of us, after we got our licenses, to hang out! We wrote letters all the time but didn't see much of each other at all. So we're making up for lost time now!

    1. Thanks Liz! Luckily the snake was going uphill so he wasn't going too fast.

  5. It's great you got to have time with a friend, and what a wonderful walk you had. The snake would have scared me to the point I would've went home right then, but that ribbon effect in the boat picture is awesome. Beautiful photography.

    1. Thanks Debi! If that snake had crossed our path I would definitely have high tailed it back to the parking lot.

  6. It must be plenty warm there if the snakes are out. My wife would probably have a heart attack if she saw a snake like that.

    1. Biggest one I've ever seen that's for sure! A really tiny snake went by my foot last year in my yard...probably 8" tops and I screeched and ran in the house!

    1. Thanks! I hesitate to ask what the snake ate...I could never own one as a pet, even if they didn't creep me out. I just can't feed live animals to another animal.

  8. How do you feel about snakes? I like them, but I don't live anywhere there are seriously poisonous ones.

    1. LOL Not a fan, Val, gotta say. hahaha I don't know if there are poisonous ones here on the Cape. Always had to be careful when hiking in California because they had rattlers but I never saw or heard one.
