The Bourne Rotary is not much fun to navigate at all. I don't like it one bit and it's like trying to drive in a video game. I think this region is the only one that refers to 'rotaries'; elsewhere they are called traffic circles or roundabouts. This one is huge with 5 major roads plus the gas station & state police barracks all converging on it, with cars going around side by side and trying to exit at the various roads, plus people trying to merge on at the same time. This is a screen cap of the aerial view of the rotary in the center with all the roads going on and off. There are smaller rotaries at either end of Buzzards Bay, but they aren't near as big as this one.
I stopped to get a couple shots of this place, which is next to the gas station.

Then I went to the I-Hop parking lot to get a shot of this shrubbery greeting at the foot of the bridge, as you cross over to the Cape.
I-Hop had one of those whales too, but it desperately needs to be repainted!

I like the second photo a lot, great shot, JoJo. And, I like the last one because of the angle, which shows us several things at once from a high POV. Yes, I did enjoy your tour, and I love learning about other places.
ReplyDeleteThank you! It's amazing what you see when you go to the back of that restaurant parking lot. It was the first time I ever went back there and was so excited to get that POV of the bridge. My friends were like, 'WHERE did you shoot that from??' Yet they eat there and never noticed!
DeleteMichigan has rotaries and you're right, they're a pain! I love all of these photos. The area you live in is so rich in nautical history and it really comes through in your photos.. I absolutely love them all and they really make me miss living on Lake Michigan.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I would love to beachcomb along Lake Michigan...I want to find a petoski (did I say that right?) stone. I tell ya one thing, being raised here, we were taught to respect the sea. When Russell & I were in elementary school, it was mandatory in 6th grade to have a safe boating course, which the school provided. I think I still have my certificate from it, dated Jan. 1976.

ReplyDeleteI don't like this one or the one in Hyannis across from the airport. They should have done a flyover with ramps like they did over in Sagamore. It's so much easier to get around down there now.
DeleteAfter living 5 years in Trinidad in the West Indies, we learned to call them Roundabouts. Trinidad was once a British colony and had a lot of British influence. I really don't care what one calls them, I just know that I do not like them. The bigger and busier the roundabout the crazier and more frightening they are.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you lived there! How cool! I reeeeeeally don't like them. There were some tiny ones in neighbourhoods up in Washington and those were fine, but when you have several major highways and boulevards feeding on and off them, it can be very intimidating.
DeleteWe have some of those roundabouts here in town and I hate them. There didn't used to be so many and then we had an idiot mayor that thought it would be lovely to use the taxpayer's money to tear up the intersections and make round abouts with flowers planted in the centers. Really??? Yeah, really! Pain in the butt. LOL
ReplyDeleteI remember when they installed that shrubbery 'Cape Cod' in the early 80s....it was initially thought of as extremely tacky. I had a coworker who said he wanted to take a four wheeler over it and tear it up. lol

DeleteOh, the traffic circle. I've only seen them in New England states. They made me scratch my head and wonder who the heck thins they're easier and work traffic flow better than a town square with stop signs???

I think they were meant to help the flow back when there were no cars. But traffic backs up on all the roads trying to get on and off it now. It can back up for 10 miles before the bridge.
DeleteI loved the clouds and enjoyed the tour of Bourne. The town I live in has dozens of roundabouts at almost every intersection including one with five exits and they are not something for the faint hearted to approach.

DeleteI have a traffic circle near me that I travel through all the time. It's not very congested so it's not too bad but still, it's annoying. Especially when people don't yield, they just fly into it all willy nilly like, "yay, let's fly!" haha
ReplyDeleteYes, that's the other thing - newbies don't see, or ignore, the signs that say traffic in the rotary has the right of way. I was on the one in BBay last week and someone came flying on and laid on his horn, as though I was supposed to yield for him. I flipped him off. I'm such a Masshole. lol

DeleteWe have a couple of small roundabouts in our city... and I get so aggravated when people don't use them correctly! I lean on the horn when idiots STOP before entering them.... geesh.
