Worst. Cookies. EVER!!!!!

We are both trying to make some healthier choices when it comes to food.  I saw a cookie recipe on Facebook that looked like it could be good, even though it lacked eggs, flour, sugar and butter.

The ingredients are seen here, but for the 3 mashed bananas that are in the bowl already.  I had my doubts about a vegan, gluten free, sugar free recipe but what the heck right?  Bananas, apple sauce and raisins are sweet....well, OK I bought unsweetened apple sauce, but still!  I wasn't sure about the coconut milk as I'd never had it, however in my mind I'd always assumed it was sweet, like condensed milk.  The original recipe called for almond milk but I'm allergic to almonds.  Then oats, cinnamon, vanilla and raisins.

I combined all the measurements and then popped them into the oven.  I had my doubts.  After I shut the oven door, I tried a little of the batter and it was pretty gross, but I thought maybe once they cooked, the oats would fluff up more.

Fresh out of the oven, I took a bite of one.  OMG soooooooo GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  No sweetness unless you hit a raisin, still very mealy and bland. I gave one to Russell and he said, 'Well.....it's.....interesting anyway.'  Such a kind hearted man....doesn't want to hurt my feelings. But I told him that it was OK to say they were horrid because I already admitted it.  Surprisingly he got a couple more and asked me to finish baking the rest of the dough because he'd eat them.  My friend Chip saw this pic on FB and said that even the spatula looks defeated.  lol

Maybe this recipe would have turned out better with the almond milk and sweetened apple sauce. I am never making them again though. My friend Angie said, 'Sweetie, life is short.  Eat real cookies'. Good advice!

  2. the ingredients DO look good. Wonder why it tastes bad? I would think the applesauce and raisens would sweeten those babies.

  6. If you want a good oatmeal cookie recipe, I have a couple I could send you. Instead of totally taking away what makes a cookie taste good (fat and sugar), you can cut it with other items. Taste is important. (If you don't HAVE to have gluten-free, if there is a choice.)

I've done my share of healthy tasteless cookies, too. No one likes them unless they are a 'hair-shirt Harry'.

Leave a comment on my blog is you want that recipe.

  7. Real coconut milk from the coconut is delicious. Wannabe from a tin or bottle is tasteless at best. But still I keep trying...

  8. Absolutely: if you're going to have a cookie, do it right. Enjoy every moment and morsel. Life is too short. If you like cookies, find somewhere else to make your good food choices! I've given up dairy, grains, soy, sugar, and artificial sweeteners, but I haven't given up my chardonnay. Life is too short not to enjoy some wine along the way!

  12. Good try anyway. You know I bet oats will never let cookies or cakes rise. Just today morning I made oats pancakes for my husband, but they included eggs and a little bit of flour. It was tasty :)But you know, even I feel fooled when there is a healthy type of recipe, without sugar, butter, eggs, flour! What else left then?:) Take care, Jojo!
