Orca Whales

I love, love, love orca whales.  PLEASE don't call them 'killer whales'.  Just don't.  My first experience with them was at Sea World in Florida and again at Marine World Africa USA in California.  While I found them to be extremely charming, adorable, smart and endearing, something just really bothered me about watching these beautiful creatures performing for humans.  Did you know that they are really part of the dolphin family?

I went on a whale watch in Victoria BC in 2007 and seeing the Resident L Pod in the wild brought me to tears.

This is L-41, named 'Mega'.  He was born in 1977.

Suffice to say I will never go to another performing whale show again.  It's just wrong.

I bought this original painting by Spray Bombs in Victoria's Inner Harbour to commemorate the experience.

I also love Pacific Northwest Native art depicting them.
This is by Jody Bergsma Designs.  She is an artist in Washington State.

Isn't this adorable?!?!?!??!

  1. Well, the photography of the whale is really very good. I too like to do photography of fishes.

  2. I agree with you about keeping these beautiful animals in captivity. No captive space can ever be large enough for them.
I love the Pacific Northwest Native art of the whale!

  6. I hate that kind of stuff. Hate zoos. The animals just look so sad...No way to roam free...Do animals get claustrophobic? Because I am and I feel that for them...I'm a nutcase, but you knew that ;-)

  8. I'm a fan of whales, and I've seen the whale shows, we had them in Vancouver too. I've gone on a whale watching trip in a Zodiak (those large rubber rafts) off the coast of Vancouver Island - Tofino. We didn't see any whales, but we got soaking wet on choppy seas (even with waterproof clothing). I have seen whales off the coast, outside of Victoria (not the inner harbour).

I love the First Nations art, too, JoJo. One of the first things I wanted to see when I moved here was totems. Emily Carr is a fave artist because she helped others realize the beauty of native art.

I love them too! Like Great Whites, they are perfectly designed to do what they do. Sadly, although I've seen a grey whale in the ocean, the only place I've seen an Orca is in the aquarium in Vancouver - but even that was a total THRILL :o)

  12. How exciting to have watched such majestic creatures in their native environment. I some times think that mankind under estimates the intelligence of creatures such as these. Personally I can't help but wonder if they are actually smarter than people - you don't see them polluting the world the way we do and when was the last time a whale or a dolphin committed an act of terrorism - like blow up a building ?

  13. I have been to Sea World San Antonio and watched them perform. I agree, it's like those carnivals where they make the elephants and camels carry children all day long in the hot summer sun. They don't get to say how they feel about it, they have no choice. :(

I love the cartoon at the end. :)

  15. I love Pacific Northwest Native art depictions of animals. Sue Coleman is another such artist, and several of her designs have been charted for counted cross stitch. I'm currently working on a raccoon, with a wolf to follow. I will have to check to see if she has an orca design.

  20. I was in Mexica during whale season and saw a pod of whales swim through. It was absolutely amazing! I was so excited and then every bump I saw in the water I thought was a whale. They are amazing creatures! Jennifer a.k.a Urban Gypsy Girl
