Music I Can Go the Rest of My Life Without Hearing Ever Again

While I am a music lover, I am kind of stuck in a certain time period when it comes to what I listen to.  So when I'm in the car, all my stations are ones that play Classic Rock and/or Oldies.  When I was growing up, the Oldies station played stuff from the 1950's.  Now they play stuff from the 70's.  Songs I once loved, and now loathe, due to being over played.

There was a time when I would drop what I was doing to listen to "Layla" or "Light My Fire."  Now I hear them on the radio, yell out "BORING!" as I furiously punch the next button, and the next one, trying to find something I'm not sick of, something that hasn't been played to absolute death.  I go up the wall whenever a DJ puts on someone requesting a song.  It's always some lame, overplayed, oh-god-if-I-hear-this-again-I'm-taking-hostages song or band.  That's when I yell out, "CLICHE!!!!"  It's usually at this point when all 6 of my programmed stations are playing shit or commercials, that I pop in a mix tape.  And some of the songs on my mix tapes, which weren't in the 'oldies' category when I made the tapes, are now overplayed on the radio so I fast forward through them too.  Like the Police.  I was never a fan of "Roxanne" even when it was a new song, but I find myself growing weary of the stuff from the "Synchronicity" album, my fave, which bums me out.

I could go the rest of my life without ever hearing the following songs and/or bands:

Bruce Springsteen, nearly everything by Bob Seger & the Rolling Stones, Eurythmics, The Doors, a lot of Eric Clapton songs, Aerosmith, Journey, Steve Miller Band, Jimi Hendrix, Billy Squier, 38 Special, James Taylor, Boston, Robert Palmer (except "Every Kinda People"), the Beatles (sorry Val), those sexist pigs ZZ Top (I've actually hated them my whole life), Blondie, REO Shitwagon, Van Morrison, Queen (except for "Killer Queen") (sorry Madi),  J. Geils Band, the Cars, the Who *coughoverratedcough*, Madonna, Fleetwood Mac (except for "Hypnotised" which never, ever gets played anyway).  More than a handful of Elton John songs; quite a few in fact.  U2, except for their first album & one other song.  I used to love Dire Straits.  Not so much anymore, but for "Skateaway", which also never gets played.  All the Led Zeppelin songs except "Hey Hey What Can I Do"......you know come to think of it, I'm glad the songs that I really like don't get played because I don't wanna become sick of them too.  But I digress.....

"Maggie May", "Jack & Diane,  John Lennon's "Imagine".   "Boys of Summer", "Cuts like a knife", "My Sharona", "You shook me all night long" (*yawn*), "Only the good die young", "Arthur's Theme", "Bad Bad Leroy Brown",  "Hotel California", "Take it Easy", "Life in the Fast Lane",  "Life's Been Good" (can you see an Eagles theme here?), "Do you believe in love", "I will survive", "My Sharona", "Runnin on Empty".  I used to love "I Melt with you" till the Hershey company started inundating us with it in their candy commercials.  David Bowie's "Changes".  The Clash's big hits "Should I stay or should I go" and "Rock the Casbah".   "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Show me the way".  "Barracuda" and "Magic Man". Van Halen's "Jump".  Free's "All right now" and Thin Lizzy's "Boys are back in town" are two of my most despised songs ever.

This is really just the tip of the iceberg.  I know there are plenty more songs and bands that I have come to loathe but I just can't think of them off the top of my pointed head.  See, this is why I make mix tapes.  If I had any idea how to use the iPod Jaime sent me, I'd start transferring music onto it now!!  Till then, I'll just keep rotating my giant collection of mix tapes in and out of my car.

  1. Oh JoJo, I am so, so feeling you here. I too grew up loving classic rock, but now feel like it has been played to death. Although alot of the songs on your list make me cringe, it is a long list and a lot of my fave groups are on there. Thankfully you have omitted the Who. Have you ever seen them live? Did you see the Concert for New York after Sept 11, and the Who's kick a** performance? If not, search it on Youtube. Anyhow picture over 3 hours of that. A musical feast. Anyhow you must have been happy when the likes of Nirvana and Sound Garden came out?
Or how about Metallica? My fave go to music though, when everything else fails has definately got to be Bob Marley. Anyhow, after reading this post, I am 100% sure that you are going to absolutely hate my post for L in this challenge, LOL ;)

Man, that's some list!!! However, I hear what you're saying. It seems to be the same songs that get played over and over and over and over.... I mean, this may come as a shock to Radio Land but Eric Clapton has recorded more songs than just 'Layla' but I'll confess, I'm compelled to crank up the volume every time I hear it (sorry)

Maybe you could try a little Doris Day as an alternative ;0)

  3. Poor JoJo! You must listen to WAY yonder more music than I do because there are very few songs that I am totally sick of. And most of those just make me laugh now because it's so silly for me to have such a violent reaction to them. Many of your "sick of" artists are and always will be my favorites. But as my father used to say, "Differences of opinions make horseraces." :)

  4. JoJo you are right. They play this stuff to death and a person cringes when they hear them again and again. It really sucks too because a lot of it is great stuff but thanks to them overplaying them...they've ruined it! I mean jeez, can't they limit themselves to playing a song say to once a week or something?! It's isn't like there's nothing else to play. Whoa, guess this one touched a nerve LOL!

  5. I agree with a lot of what you say. I actually haven't listened to the oldies station since they revamped it and sacked my fave DJ, so I'm not as jaded about them as you.

I do still love Layla, which was top play on the jukebox at my Uni bar for most of my 4 years there, and was still top play after 10 years!

I still love Jimi, and I could listen to The Beatles non-stop for ever more. I love early Fleetwood Mac that never gets played, when they were a Blues group (saw them live on stage back then). Also saw The Who, and they did a lot of good stuff, and a lot of not-so-good, especially later.

Never "got" Queen, or The Doors, or Van Morrison, Led eppelin, certainly not Madonna. Elton's boring. Many of those you dislike I never even heard their music , 'cos as you know I stopped listening to rock/pop when The Beatles broke up.

  6. I am definitely on your page. I have Sirrius in the car and they play the same stuff over and over....Jewel, Jackson Brown,Van Morrison...ugh! I do confess that anything by Crosby, Stills, Nash and screeching Neil Young I still like...oh, wait, maybe not Marakeesh Express, or Guineivere. Guess we can't be pleased all the time.

  7. Jojo,

I owe you an apology for not visiting your blog often enough - I realise that I've been missing out!

Loving your A-Z posts! Keep it up and keep me smiling :)

PS - didn't mean to make you cry - >*hugs*<

  8. Your 'sick of' list has a lot of my favorites. Absolutely loved .38 Special and got to see them in concert. Of course my all-time favorite will always be Kansas. They had some more commercial songs but as a whole the music was genius, in my opinion.

  9. I think you can just get too much of a good thing. You need a complete break from the same old thing to find it appealing agian. Because I've been doing a 70's theme on my blog I have been listenign to music long forgotten and I'm having a great time, but by the time I get to Z I will probably not want to hear 60's or 70's music for a long long time.
