Disconnected or Apathetic?

I snagged this picture off Facebook.  It really, really cracked me up.  It's sort of the way I've been feeling lately about everything.

Don't get me wrong, I am really glad that bin Laden is finally dead.  But I'll be honest, it's a hollow victory. It's nearly 10 years too late.  He's had all this time to name and train his successors, and how many more people have died in the Middle East since 9/11?  There will always be some fundamentalist whack job waiting in the wings to do Allah's alleged bidding.  When I saw the status updates announcing the news on Facebook, I didn't really feel like it was going to be one of those 'where were you when you heard' moments.  Like when the Challenger exploded or Kennedy was shot.  It was like,  yeah OK, so they finally got him, but nothing's gonna stop.  The wars aren't going to end now.  The terrorists are still going to try to attack us.  What's the retribution going to be?  It's like living in earthquake country, always waiting for that other shoe to drop.  Is it gonna be today?  How about today?

Do I feel this way because I'm so caught up in my own world right now that I can't devote the energy to realize the history-making moment this is?  Or am I just so bloody sick and tired of hearing about the wars and al Quaeda and all the other by products of that Middle Eastern quagmire we've gotten ourselves into but good.  Was this a history-making moment for you?

Gotta say I was shocked when I heard the news...but then, I was knee-deep in absorbing the new epi of CI, tweeting and emailing. I was exhausted and that bit of news just put me over the edge. I agree with you about the bittersweetness of the whole thing...we are in more trouble now then we ever were. The killing of innocent lives and deaths for more soldiers just got amped up, I'm afraid. I'm glad he's gone too but it'll cost us.

Unfortunately, these people are like those skeletons in the movie 'Jason and The Argonauts' - you kill one (even the BIG one) and hundreds spring up in his place.

I just hope the very public demonstrations of jubilation at his demise in the States isn't repaid with something even worse than 9/11 - god forbid!

Put simply, I don't feel any safer with him dead than I did when he was alive.

  4. I'm just glad we never gave up...And I'm glad he's dead. But I think things are changing in the Middle East...A new generation is coming in, they want freedom. Not terrorism.

  5. Tess is right. I've heard a lot of commentators say that the "Arab Spring", if it is successful, will mean a lot of those who might have been attracted to terrorism turn to their new democracies instead. Here's hoping.

  6. I'm tired of all the gloating over his death, it is horrific, unbecoming, disgusting... evil.

Okay, he's dead, it's over; time to move on, USA!

  7. Nice box!

I'm so out of the loop but thanks for access - I have read your news and I hope everything works out just as you hope it will! Life has a funny way of sorting itself out usually...

As for Osama - join the 'Deathers' - demand to see his death certificate and refuse to believe it when you do.

Actually, I suspect he hasn't got one. Suspicious, huh?
