I Fought The Lawn And The Lawn Won

June 12, 2010

It started raining right after I shot these and it rained for weeks.
It was actually still manageable here. Then it grew...

June 23, 2010

...and grew.

We had a break in the weather and Brian tried to get it cut.

I'm really not sure what he was trying to accomplish here, but every time I laid eyes on this little path, I'd dissolve into hysterical laughter.

June 26, 2010

Got it cut up to the start of the thickest part.

July 10, 2010

Needless to say, Pepper and Sagan are not happy campers with the current yard situ.

July 13, 2010

Brian starts hacking away at it with the weed whacker.

It took a long, long time just to do this small bit.
August 1, 2010

Now it's drying out and going to seed.
I've been thinking about making a mini crop circle.

August 4, 2010

And then the weed whacker died.....

....so we had to get a new one....

...which Brian used to make significant headway in what my Facebook friends are calling "The Mass Grave".

August 7, 2010

And now it's started raining again.

I give up!!

JoJo...OMG, you are killing me, just killing me...not only is your post title so damn clever but I can EMPATHIZE with the grass situation. I would be too embarrassed to show you pictures of mine. The stages of growth you showed are exactly what happened to me...then the hedge clippers died and the lawn mower is begging to be put out of its misery. I got new hedge clippers so they're done and I am between weed whacking the yard and cutting with the ghost of its former self of a lawn mower. Strength in numbers...not that I feel happy that you are in the same boat as me, just that I'm not the only one. You are making great progress though! Thank you SO much for this post!

  2. Not to belabor the point of our psychic connectedness, but when our lawn gets really super out of control, the hub mows mazes/labyrinths in it for Harley to play in....

Seriously, at every turn I'm saying, Jojo and I are living in some parallel universe!

BTW, I love the name of this post. Good one.

  3. rofl That was hilarious! I can certainly relate to your situation. Fortunately for me I no longer have to worry about the yard. I absolutely hated dealing with it. When it rained it had to be cut all the time. When it didn't rain, we had to water it - although I would quite frankly have been fine with letting the whole thing just die but grass is ever so resilient and weeds even more so.

Good luck! Just think, though, winter is just around the corner. ;-)

  4. LMAO!!!
Jojo, is was pissing myself laughing. You are so awesome.
Now who would have thought I'd be happy to see that my "lawn" consists of a junkyard and broken concrete under an uphill of rusted car parts :-))

  5. My suggestion would be just to cut the odd path through and leave the rest for the bees. Weeds are GOOD for bees, and we need bees. (I know you don't like insects, but you like food, I expect!)

Over here parks have areas of grass left long as doggie toilets. Are yours really anti-long-grass?

Please may we have some of your grass? After de-mossing the lawn, it's now full of unsightly bald patches ;0)

  7. Idea? WHY DON'TCHA JUST HIRE A LANDSCAPER TO DO THE WORK AND ENJOY THE REST OF THE SUMMER SIPPING LONG ISLAND ICED TEAS? See that's why I live in apartment complexes, that way maintenance can do all the work. Smart. Jo you are wonderful! Cheers and Good Luck!!
