Val took the words out of my mouth!! The price just keeps on rocketing despite the oil price being stable (or so I read) and the £1 trading at almost $2. Someone somewhere (in the UK it's the Treasury - 80% of the price is TAX!!) is definitely screwing us :0(
But at least you guys have good alternate transportation in place; esp. in London where you can take the tube everywhere. You are screwed over here if you live outside of any major metro area.
Yes and the oil companies are enjoying record profits. Jojo, you are right about alterative transportation here. It is either nonexistant or so bad you have to plan 3 extra hours for travel. When I visit my Mom in Washington D.C. I love their efficient metro.
Claire - living in the city of SF was a breeze thanks to the efficient MUNI system, but once I moved to Marin, commuting to SF on Golden Gate Transit took 2 hours each way.
I have often pondered moving to a more "impairment friendly" city, like D.C.,San Francisco or well, maybe not NYC.No offense,it is just so...cramped.However,they other cities still have space....so,who knows?
I use to think I wanted to live in NYC,but after realizing how stressful an environment like that was,I decided against it.
That sign reminds me of a George Carlin bit...VERY funny and unfortunately, all too true.
4.50 in oakland is amazing but americans still insist on driving obscenely huge vehicles in the fast lane going 80 plus. i get so pissed off at the rednecks in their big american made raised up pickups blowing everyone else off the road.
i think agree with all of you. because it is much more expensive over here, but we probably do have a better public transportation (but also only when you life in bigger cities. it's the same shit here when you live outside these areas). and i still don't get why people drive around in these huge vehicles that need so much gasoline. besides it's not that hard for the industry either to build cars that need less, because obviously there are cars like that driving around here.
my personal solution is that i don't have a car, but i'll probably need one, too when i'll be over there with you guys. maybe i should buy a scooter. ;)
jojo; not everyone lives in London here... many people also have no choice but to drive.
my son puts in £60 of petrol a week, that's $120 to get to and from work. he's starting a new job Monday nearer his home... should make a big big difference to his pocket

What many seem to forget is that many of us HAVE to drive those vehicles. For work.
Ironically, in most cases here in the SF Bay Area, it's so we can work on the mini-mansions owned by uber-rich members of the Left, the Bohemian Bourgeoisie.
Sorry to disagree with Mark, but I don't think most people need the larger vehicles. They just want them. I don't know anyone who actually needs a hummer that isn't serving in the army. Most of us could get by with a smaller more fuel efficient car. I just traded down from a min-van, yeah I am a mom with kids, to a hybrid civic. It's not always as fun but it's worth it.
And you can expect to spend $10 in the UK!
