Mattapoisett Do-Over and Bonus Walk

Sick of Southeastern MA yet?  ;-)

It's not often we get a 68 degree sunny day so I headed back out to Mattapoisett to track down Ned's Point Lighthouse.

I didn't realize that there was a small beach next to it, so I explored there first.

I found a lot of glass.  Not totally worn and there were way more fresh pieces, but I picked up anything that looked a little frosted and didn't cut me.

It's the beach where brown bottles go to die apparently.  Again, not that I'm advocating littering, but if you must drink & shatter glass at the beach, please remember that Bud Light now comes in cobalt blue bottles.

I got home around Noon, ate some lunch...checked in on Facebook.  But it was just so incredibly gorgeous out that I had to go for a walk on the Canal.  I did a little over 2 miles round trip, bridge to bridge.

I saw a whale too!  L41, Mega, was visiting from the Salish Sea.  hahaha  I was surprised to find such a large toy right on the service road and I'm sure it belonged to one of the many children in strollers, but hey you know, finders keepers and all that.  I would have returned it if I actually heard an upset kid or parents looking for it, but I didn't so yeah, mine.

This was on the other side, at the RV campground.  People really make themselves at home.

No idea what this is but it's all over.

We're very lucky to have this awesome waterway on which to walk!

Sandwich in Spring

Those SE Mass posts took up so much time that I got way behind on current pics.  I went into Sandwich the first week of May to get a few snappies.  Things weren't quite at their peak yet, flowers- and leaves-wise.

This tree was really gorgeous.

Shawme Pond

One of my friends suggested that I take a photo of the pond every day for a year.  If I lived in town I might do it but not now.

Grape Hyacinth.

Grist Mill

The town finally finished re-doing this area where there's a 'bubblah' over an artesian well.  (People in MA refer to water fountains as 'bubblers').   The two of us don't care for it; we liked the stone/flagstones that was there before.

So far it's been a great month, weatherwise.  Perfect temperature and quite a bit of sun!

Whaling Museum, Part 3

There's no denying that there was some amazing scrimshaw work done on bones and teeth.

Additional products that once used whale oil.

Pie wheels and utensils

Some with beautiful inlay.

All that detail and scroll work done by hand, without a dremel or any other power tool!  AMAZING!

I liked this painting of a sperm whale crunching down on a boat with sailors.  Reminded me of Moby Dick.

I should have paid attention to the info on what these are.  They are really cool but no idea what they are.
UPDATE:  They are called yarn winders.

Beautifully crafted miniature ships.

And speaking of Moby.....

Captain Ahab of the Pequod!

Queequeg on the left

 I loved this paper cutting.

And also this clock was wicked cool.  Those ships in the scene underneath the dial rocked back and forth with each 'tick tock'.

Like I needed anymore souvenirs besides postcards, but I have always wanted a deck prism and they had small, affordable ones.  I couldn't resist the adorable glass whale or that 'Life is a Journey' compass.  And I also knew I'd kick myself if I walked out without buying a Boat in a Bottle kit.

I hope you enjoyed my travels in Southeastern Massachusetts!
